     Research notes (22 November 1998):
Scottish parish records show James christened 10 Oct 1840. This date conflicts with most of his other birth dates. It is possible that another child named James was born and died young. Then the name James was given to a child born later. It should be noted, however, that birth dates of other sibs conflict with their christening dates as well.

James came from Dundee, Scotland at age 4 with parents to Canada where they had 10 children. They came to the States in 1888 where they had 4 more children.

[The census shows James living in the next dwelling beside his father, Robert.]

1900 census records show James and his family living in the Town of Villenova. This census shows his birth date as Oct 1842 and having been married 30 years. It also shows he and his wife coming to America in 1888.

They lived in Egypt, NY and then in Cherry Creek or Town of Ellington and then in Hamlet, NY. (Egypt is in Town of Perrington south of Rochester.)

His last farm was in the Town of Sheridan, NY.

James was born in Dundee, Scotland. He travelled to Canada with his parents and older brother and sisters. He was twelve at the time of the crossing which would make the year 1853. He married Mary White 16 February 1870 and the first born children were born in Thornbury, Ontario, Canada. The family moved to the Town of East Bloomfield, NY, USA between 1886 and 1889 because Pearl was the first born child born in the states. Lillie and Ruth were born in Egypt, NY and Hugh was born in 1896 in Cherry Creek, NY so the family moved to Cherry Creek between 1893 and 1896. From Cherry Creek, they moved to Hamlet, NY and then to Sheridan, Chautauqua County, NY where they lived the rest of their lives. James was a farmer. - Marjorie (Gilray) Crosgrove

James had been ill for two years before his death. He had been a resident of Sheridan for the last 5 years. He was a respected member of the Sheridan Grange.16
