Thomas Phanenhaur was referenced in a newspaper article about Drowning at Palmer Rapids
It was a great shock to the whole community when the news spread on Thursday evening last that Ferdinand Liebenthal, eldest son of Frank Liebenthal, perished in the Madawaska river. The victim had been working on the Combermere road, and after supper he and Garnet Easton got into a canoe to sail down to Proudfoot's store to get some provisions. On the way back -- near the bridge at Mr. Fred Krieger's -- the canoe upset in the current. Mr. Liebenthal jumped and made an effort to swim to the shore but it would seem the current was too strong and he turned back to the canoe. He reached the mark but was too exhausted to get into it. He sank beneath the treacherous waters and drowned. Mr. Easton stayed with the canoe until rescued by John Krieger and Thomas Phanenhaur. on 25 May 1934 in the book Reflections of a Century compiled by the Eganville Leader (2002), Eganville, Ontario, CanadaG.9
Thomas Samuel Phanenhour was listed as predeceased in the obituary of Lloyd Edwin Phanenhour who died 19 December 2008.10

The Krieger family history as I remember it was that Frank and my mother's Aunt Rosie were both suffocated when they tried to evade a fire by getting into a well. Based upon Ontario Death Registration document images on Ancestry.com, I now know that Rosa died in 1911 while Frank and his brother Rex both perished in the well in 1916. Frank's second wife, and infant daughter also died in this fire.

Reading below about the great fires in Porcupine Lake area adds detail. This was an area opened by the discovery of gold in 1908/09. Contemporary pictures show a rough hewn community in the bush of Northern Ontario.

What I had understood to be a prairie fire was in fact, a huge forest fire that came on so quickly that 4 communities and at least 223 people were lost. I also assumed that they were farmers, and were on their land. Their death registrations confirm that they were farmers.
Frank and Rosie's sons "went to live with their Uncle Joe in Chicago" after their parent's deaths. Were they living with relatives in Renfrew County (they were 5 and 3 in 1911) or did they escape the fire some other way? The only other information I remember is that one of the boys, Gordon, lost his arm in an accident with a shotgun. I don't know if this was before or after the above incident.

THE GREAT FIRE OF 1916
On July 29, 1916, fires which had been burning for some weeks around settlers' clearings along the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway were united by strong winds into one huge conflagration. Burning easterly along a 40-mile front, it largely or completely destroyed the settlements of Porquis Junction, Iroquois Falls, Kelso, Nushka, Matheson, and Ramore. It also partially razed the hamlets of Homer and Monteith, while a smaller fire caused widespread damage in and around Cochrane. The 500,000-acre holocaust took an estimated 223 lives, more than any other forest fire in Canadian history, and led to the development of improved techniques and legislation for the prevention and control of forest fires.14,15,16

     Other information:
Mom always told us that she suffocated in a well with her husband escaping a bush fire. However, her death registration indicates she died of consumption after an illness of 8 months. See Ontario Death Registration 027284. Frank Ohlman made this registration, and gave her father's name as Fred Yourt rather than Krieger.14

Frank and Rex suffocated in a well while trying to escape from a wildfire. His mother's 1920 obituary noted that both Frank and his brother Xavier (Rex) "perished in the disastrous fire two years ago at Purquois Junction." This would have meant they died in 1918.

The Ontario Death Registrations for Frank and Rex indicated that they died on July 29, 1916 of suffocation in a well. Frank's wife, Pollie, and infant daughter, Myrtle died of suffocation and were burnt in a cabin.
