Emma Maitland and Thomas Maitland appeared on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Avery Twp., Hancock County, Iowa, enumerated 4 June 1900, enumerated as a teamster. Their children Abner, James and Ada were listed as living with them. He came to the US in 1868.9

Emma Maitland and Thomas Maitland appeared on the 1910 U.S. Federal Census of Union Twp., Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, enumerated 30 April 1910, enumerated as a farmer on a rented farm. Their children Mathias J, Adah, Laura, Emma and Thomas were listed as living with them.10

Emma O Maitland and Thomas L Maitland appeared on the 1920 U.S. Federal Census of Belmond, Pleasant Twp., Wright County, Iowa, enumerated 6 January 1920, enumerated as the proprietor of a hotel. Their children Laura M, Emma and Thomas L were listed as living with them.11

Celebrate Their Golden Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Maitland Were Married Fifty Years Ago
Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Maitland of Nashua celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday.

All of their children and other relatives and friends (32 in number) joined in a big picnic dinner in their honor at the Little Brown church grounds.

The anniversary actually occurred Saturday, as Mr. and Mrs. Maitland were married on June 13, 1886, at Sycamore, Ill. They came to Iowa, settling in Wright county, in 1888. About six years ago they moved to a farm southeast of Nashua, and for the past three years have been residents of Nashua. Both are still quite active despite their advanced years, and enjoyed he event to the fullest extent.

The picnic also honored the 30th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Courtney of Dows, which occurred June 14th. Mrs. Courtney and Mrs. Maitland are sisters.

A photographer took pictures of the group, and a purse of money and many other gifts were received by the honored couple as remembrances of the occasion.

Those present to enjoy the event were: Mr. and Mrs. Maitland's children: J. Matt Maitland, Minneapolis; Tommy Maitland and wife and children of Pine Island, Minn; Mrs. Adah Peterson and son, Storm Lake; Mrs. M. V. (Emma) Gehrt and husband and family of Bradgate, and Mrs. Laura Crooks and sons of Nashua; their daughter-in-law, Mrs. A. E. Maitland, Clear Lake; Mr. Maitland's brother, Robert Maitland and his daughter, Mrs. John Hyde and husband and family, of Ventura, Iowa; Mrs. Maitland's sister Mrs. J. P. Courtney and husband and son, Rodney, of Dows; and Mrs. Margaret Thompson of Minneapolis.

Mr. and Mrs. Maitland have 18 grandchildren, and all but seven of them were present at the anniversary celebration.15

     James Matthais Maitland was born on 12 April 1896 in Goodell, Hancock County, Iowa, USAG.4,3,5,6 He was the son of Thomas Laurence Maitland and Emma Oral Braga.4,5 James married Emma Louise Kalpin circa 1917.1 James died on 17 March 1939 in Veteran's hospital, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USAG, at age 42.7,8,9,6,2,10 He was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USAG.2,6

     He also went by the name of Matt.11 His name was also recorded as Mathias J Maitland.5

James appeared on the 1900 Federal Census Avery Twp., Hancock County, Iowa in the household of his parents, Thomas Maitland and Emma Maitland.4

Mathias J appeared on the 1910 Federal Census Union Twp., Cerro Gordo County, Iowa in the household of his parents, Thomas Maitland and Emma Maitland.5 James Matthais Maitland registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 in Parkers Prairie, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, USAG. He was a rural letter carrier working from Parkers Prairie. He was single, and had been born in Goodell, Iowa..3

James Matthais Maitland began military service on 11 March 1918.10 He ended military service on 13 February 1919.10 He appeared on the 1920 U.S. Federal Census of Parkers Prairie, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, enumerated 5 January 1920, enumerated as the proprietor of a restaurant. His cousin, James R Maitland was included in the household. James was listed as clerk in a restaurant.12 He appeared on the 1930 U.S. Federal Census of Parkers Prairie, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, enumerated April 1930, enumerated as a salesman, but I could not decipher the industry.1

     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Globe-Gazette published in Mason City, Iowa 24 March 1939 :

J. Matt Maitland, '13 Graduate, Dies in Veterans Hospital

Nashua -- J. Matt Maitland who formerly lived at Goodell, and was graduated from the Mason City high school in 1913, died at the Veteran's hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., Friday, March 17.

The funeral was held in Minneapolis the following Monday, and his body was placed in a vault until spring, when it is expected that a National Legion cemetery will be established. The funeral was in charge of the American Legion post at Minneapolis, of which he was a member.

He was born at Goodell, April 12, 1896, and is survived by his wife, and nine children; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Maitland; one brother, Thomas L. Maitland, Nashua; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Crooks, Nashua; Emma Gehrt, Bradgate; Adah Peterson, Storm Lake.

Other Notes
The V.A. cemetery locator search does not include his record. Fort Snelling National Cemetery was established in 1939, so it may be where he was interred.6


In the obituary of Thomas Laurence Maitland which printed 7 May 1948, Matt Maitland was listed as predeceased.13

     Ada V Maitland was born on 21 February 1898 in Iowa, USAG.2,1,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Thomas Laurence Maitland and Emma Oral Braga.2,1 Ada married John S Peterson on 29 April 1922 in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, USAG, resided in Beuna Vista county (Iowa) and their post office was at Storm Lake.

This appears to be his second marriage since the 1930 census shows that he was 21 when he first married. Iadah (sic) claimed to be 22 (not 24) when she married John.6,7 Ada died on 24 June 1993 at age 95.3

He was stationed on Russel Island, was in the invasion of Okinawa, where he received phosphorous burns and was later at Tientsin, China. He has the purple heart and one battle star besides his service stripes. He came from Detroit Sunday evening, where he had been visiting his father and is a guest at the Florence Chadwick home here with his mother.20

     Herbert L Crooks was born circa 1896 in Iowa, USAG.2 Herbert married Laura M Maitland, daughter of Thomas Laurence Maitland and Emma Oral Braga, circa 1922.1,2 Herbert L Crooks and Laura M Maitland were divorced.3
     Herbert L Crooks and Laura M Crooks appeared on the 1930 U.S. Federal Census of Des Moines, Lee Twp., Polk County, Iowa, enumerated 4 April 1930, enumerated as a driver in bus transportation. Their children Ralph O and Robert L were listed as living with them.2 In the obituary of Robert Lee Crooks which printed 26 February 1945, his father, Herbert Crooks of Chicago, was listed as a survivor.4

     Ralph Orland Crooks was born on 13 November 1925 in Ames, Story County, Iowa, USAG.6,1,2,4,5,7 He was the son of Herbert L Crooks and Laura M Maitland.1,4,5 Ralph died on 4 May 2005 at age 79.6,2,7 He was buried in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado, USAG.2,7

     Ralph O appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Des Moines, Lee Twp., Polk County, Iowa in the household of his parents, Herbert L Crooks and Laura M Crooks.4

Ralph O appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Nashua, Bradford Twp., Chickasaw County, Iowa in the household of his mother Laura Crooks.5
     Ralph Orland Crooks, grandson, was referenced in a newspaper article about Thomas Laurence Maitland and Emma Oral Braga on 24 December 1941 in the newspaper the Nashua Reporter.8

Ralph Orland Crooks began military service circa March 1944.9 In the obituary of Robert Lee Crooks which printed 26 February 1945, his brother, Pvt. Ralph Crooks with the marines in the South Pacific, was listed as a survivor.3 He ended military service on 31 May 1946 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USAG.9

Cpl. Ralph Crooks, son of Mrs. Laura Crooks of Storm Lake, formerly of Nashua, received his discharge at Chicago the last of May, after serving in the First Marine division two years and two months. He was stationed on Russel Island, was in the invasion of Okinawa, where he received phosphorous burns and was later at Tientsin, China. He has the purple heart and one battle star besides his service stripes. He came from Detroit Sunday evening, where he had been visiting his father and is a guest at the Florence Chadwick home here with his mother.9
In the obituary of Thomas Laurence Maitland which printed 7 May 1948, his grandson, Ralph Crooks was listed as a pallbearer.10

Three birthdays were celebrated at a birthday party for 17 given by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Crooks at their home, 1005 Boylan Avenue, Sunday.

Mr. Crooks' birthday was Saturday. The Crooks' son, Paul, will have a birthday Nov. 18, which is also the date of the birthday of Mrs. V. M. Gehrt of Bradgate, who shared honors at the family party. Birthday gifts were presented to the three.

Dinner was served at noon and lunch, in the late afternoon.

Guests included Mr. Crooks' mother, Mrs. Laura Crooks and her mother, Mrs. Emma Maitland of Carroll; Mr. and Mrs. Gehrt of Bradgate; Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Livesy and children and Mr. and Mrs. Burdine Larson and children, Fort Dodge.11
