Robert Moffat was born circa 1771 in Craiglands Village, Dumfriesshire, ScotlandG, age 80 in the 1851 census, and died at age 82 on his gravestone8,6 or circa 1770 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, ScotlandG, date and location reported by Mary Gow.9 or circa 1776 in Dumfriesshire, ScotlandG, age 65 in the 1841 census.7 Robert married Jane Renwick, daughter of William Renwick and Jennet Beattie, on 14 December 1810 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, ScotlandG, some sources give Dec 4, 1810.10,11,12,13,14,15,16,7,17,18,19 Robert died before 13 May 1852.13 He was buried on 13 May 1852 in Moffat Churchyard, Moffat, Dumfriesshire, ScotlandG.20
Alternatively, he died on 22 May 1853 in Craigielands Village, ScotlandG.21,22,23
Robert Moffat and Jeen Moffat appeared on the 1841 British Census of in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, at Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish, enumerated 6 June 1841, enumerated as a Shop Keeper at Cot on Beatock. Their children Jeen, John and George were listed as living with them.7

The following biographical information was shared in a spreadsheet containing her research, courtesy of Mary Gow, before 22 June 2003 :
She provided the following published memorial inscription:

Moffat Memorials No. 125
In memory of Robert Moffat who died at Craigielands Village May 22nd 1855 (sic) aged 82 years.
Also Jane Renwick his wife who died Canada West 1867 aged 80 years.
Also David their son who died at Craigielands Village April 9th 1838 aged 22 years

I received a photo of above mentioned gravemarker from Bill Moffat on Dec 1, 2003. He took it while visiting Scotland in the summer. The date of death is clearly May 22nd, 1853.21,23

     Other information:

Extract from a letter from Bill Moffat received Dec 1, 2003:
"... Everything else seemed to be not important after our wonderful trip to Scotland. We come from a beautiful place with people who are both friendly and sometimes stand offish. We spent about 8 days in and around Moffat but did not find out much except we come from either the family at BODEBECK or the one at CRAIGBECK. My bet is on the former. We did confirm Robert & Jean through his gravestone and the 1851 census. when he was 80 so his birthdate is still up in the air 1771 or 1773. Jane age 22 and HALBERT age 35 1816 were in the census too. We could find no record of other children except DAVID on birthstone (sic). Many children were not even registered as it was not compulsory. HALBERT must have been a twin to DAVID."

"We met with Mrs. Margaret Moffat widow of Francis the former chief but she was not very forthcoming with any knowledge she has to have. Robert is listed in the census as a spirit merchant/grocer."26

     November 2016 Research notes:
One possible birth record for Robert gives his birth date as Apr 18, 1775 at Hutton and Corrie, Dumfries, Scotland. The father was William Moffat and the mother was Mary Saddler.27

Aug 27, 2014 note from Erica Johnson, Research Officer at the Dumfries & Galloway Library to Mary-Anne Rayner:
Robert Moffat and Jean Renwick did indeed marry on the 14th December 1810, in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish, Dumfriesshire. The records from the Old Parish Registers do not include Parents details in Marriage entries.
I searched for Baptism Records for Robert Moffat but unfortunately none was found. His burial record was noted as Robert Moffat in Craigielands Village, buried Moffat Churchyard on the 13th May 1852. But no gravestone was found for him or his wife.
The couple are found in the 1851 Census living at Craiglands Village...
I had better luck with Jean Renwick, who was baptised on the23rd June 1790, daughter of William Renwick and Janet Beattie, in Johnstone Parish Dumfriesshire....
The Renwicks were buried in Wamphray Parish Kirkyard:
