Since his brother Arthur was born in August of 1892, this year is probably accurate, despite the evidence of his gravestone which gives his year of birth as 1892.4,2,1,5 He was the son of August Herman Hartwig and Tena Gienow.4,5 Alexander married Louise Maves, daughter of William Maves and Adelie Ghold, on 10 November 1920 at Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.7,1,3,8 Alexander died in 1985.1,2 He was buried at Emmanuel (aka Immanuel) Baptist Cemetery, Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.1,2

    After a lengthy illness a well-known respected citizen in the person of Mrs. Eliza Hartwig passed from this life on Wednesday night September 19th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Yourth and Mr. Yourth. The deceased was born in Stafford Ont., on Dec 30th 1869 and was in her 82nd year. She was a daughter of the late Mary Doerring and Matthues Layman. On May 27th 1897 she was united in marriage to Herman Hartwig who predeceased her 17 years ago since which time she made her home with her family. Also four brothers and one sister predeceased her. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Miss Mary Layman of Stafford and four daughters, Mrs. McLeod, Mary Ann of Alexandria; Mrs. George Yourth, Isobelle, of Golden Lake; Mrs. Herbert Kuehl, Amanda of North Bay and Mrs. Norman Layman, Mae, Golden Lake. Also two sons Andrew and Don Hartwig of Killaloe. Two stepsons Ernest and Alex also of Killaloe. One daughter Minnie predeceased her. There are 38 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who mourn the loss of a grandmother.
    The funeral was held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from her late residence wiht (sic) service in the Evangelical U.B. church of which she was a faithful member when health permitted her to attend. Service was in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. M. Schlenker assisted in the home and church by Rev. Weisser of Calvary Baptist church, Killaoe. Interment was made in the Baptist cemetery in Killaloe.
    Pall bearers were Messrs. Mervin, Donal and Glenden Hartwig, Messrs. Reginald and Bud Kuehl.
    Flowerbearers were Mrs. Ernie Junnop, Mrs. Fred Neuman, Miss Muriel Hartwig, Miss Ella Mae Hartwig, Mrs. Reginald Kuehl and Mrs Bud Kuehl.
    The funeral was held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from her late residence wiht (sic) service in the Evangelical U.B. church of which she was a faithful member when health permitted her to attend.     After a lengthy illness a well-known respected citizen in the person of Mrs. Eliza Hartwig passed from this life on Wednesday night September 19th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Yourth and Mr. Yourth. The deceased was born in Stafford Ont., on Dec 30th 1869 and was in her 82nd year. She was a daughter of the late Mary Doerring and Matthues Layman. On May 27th 1897 she was united in marriage to Herman Hartwig who predeceased her 17 years ago since which time she made her home with her family. Also four brothers and one sister predeceased her. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Miss Mary Layman of Stafford and four daughters, Mrs. McLeod, Mary Ann of Alexandria; Mrs. George Yourth, Isobelle, of Golden Lake; Mrs. Herbert Kuehl, Amanda of North Bay and Mrs. Norman Layman, Mae, Golden Lake. Also two sons Andrew and Don Hartwig of Killaloe. Two stepsons Ernest and Alex also of Killaloe. One daughter Minnie predeceased her. There are 38 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who mourn the loss of a grandmother.

     Daniel Francis Gienow was born on 22 January 1895 at Killaloe, Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.2,3,6,5 He was the son of Daniel Frederick Gienow and Anne Bork.2,3,4,5 Daniel died on 9 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge, Pas de Calais, France, at age 22. He was killed in action during the first day of the offensive.7,8,6,9,10 He was buried at Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus, Pas De Calais, FranceG.11,9

     Danial Genow appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, Danial Genow and Annie B Genow.3

Dan Geno appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatchewan in the household of his parents, Daniel Geno and Anna Geno.5 Daniel Francis Gienow was a farmer before 11 March 1916 at Hazlet, Saskatchewan, CanadaG.1

Pte Daniel Francis Gienow began military service on 11 March 1916 at Estevan, Saskatchewan, CanadaG, where he had his medical examination and was assigned to the 152nd Overseas Battalion. He was assigned Regimental Number 925497. Ralph Gienow tells me that his father was so upset by his enlisting, that he did not speak to Dan between the time of his enlistment, and the time he left home. By Sep. 7th, 1916 he was at Camp Hughes west of Carberry, MB where he was hospitalized with "rheumatism", being discharged back to his unit on the 21st. On Oct 3rd, 1916 he sailed from Halifax for England with his unit aboard the S.S. Missanabie, arriving on the 20th. By Dec. 7th, he was in France and taken on strength in the 5th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment, Canadian Infantry.1,4 In the obituary of Annie Burke which printed 25 April 1959, Annie's son, Daniel Gienow was listed as predeceased.12 In the obituary of Annie Bell Gienow which printed 21 August 2001, Annie's brother, Dan Gienow was listed as predeceased.13
