Douglas Walter Moffat was born on 12 August 1891 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG, Note that the family grave marker gives his birth date as Aug 11th, one day earlie. The 1906 census gives his birthplace as Ontario.10,11,7 Alternatively, he was born on 12 August 1891 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG, Manitoba Birth Registration 1891-002355. This database confuses me. Some records clearly use DDMMYYYY date format while other records use MMDDYYYY. So conceivably, this index record could be interpreted as Dec 8th.12 He was the son of William Moffat and Jean Jeffrey Douglas1,2,4,3,5,6,7,8,9 or in July 1892 in Manitoba, CanadaG, in the 1911 and 1916 census.3,6 Douglas died on 17 December 1916 in Lycée Henri Wallon, Valenciennes, FranceG, at age 25.13 Alternatively, he died on 17 December 1916 in Kriegsgefangenen Stamnlager Wahn, Wahn, GermanyG, at age 25 according to official military documents.14,15,4,16 He was buried on 18 December 1916 in Valenciennes (St. Roch) Communal Cemetery Nord, Valenciennes, FranceG.14

Douglas Walter Moffat is remembered on a gravemarker or memorial in St. James Cemetery, Portage Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG.11
His name was recorded as Douglas Walter Moffatt on his birth registration.9

Douglass (sic) W Moffat appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the household of his parents, William Moffat and Allice M W Moffat.5 Douglas appeared on the 1906 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces of Manitoba, in the household of William Moffat and Maud Moffat.7

Douglas Moffatt appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Manitoba in the household of his parents, William Moffatt and Alice M Moffatt, listed as a farmer's son.3 Douglas Walter Moffat was a farmer before he enlisted in November 1915.2

Pte Douglas Walter Moffat began military service on 17 November 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG, Douglas joined the 90th Battalion upon his enlistment.. He listed his next-of-kin as William Moffat on his Attestation (enlistment) papers.2 Douglas appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the household of William Moffatt and Maud Moffatt, listed as in the military overseas and his occupation was noted as a farmer on his own account.6 In October 1916, Douglas Walter Moffat He sailed from Halifax to England aboard the S. S. Olympic (sister ship of the Titanic) on May 31, 1916, arriving at Liverpool on June 8, 1916. He trained at Shorncliffe. On Aug 28, 1916 he was taken on strength by the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles in France.

Just short of four weeks later, he was reported missing on Oct 1, 1916 and was unofficially reported as a prisoner of war at Beaumetz. It was noted that he had gun shot wounds to his hand, chest and abdomen. Based upon an unoffical transcription of the 1ST CMR War Diaries, he was probably wounded and take prisoner during a raid to bomb Regina Trench. They captured 2 officers and 140 other ranks at the expense of 1 officer missing, 1 officer wounded, 40 other ranks missing and 13 other ranks wounded. They could not hold the ground gained once the Germans received reinforcements and counter-attacked.

There were later reports of his being transferred to "Wahn bei Coln" or Wahn near Cologne.17,2 He ended military service on 17 December 1916 upon his death due to his wounds while a prisoner of war.2,16
The following newspaper article appeared in the Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg Tribune 10 November 1919 :
A memorial service at St. Paul's honoured those that made the supreme sacrifice during the war. Forty-eight men were honoured, including Pte. Douglas Moffat.18

This analysis is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources., April 2017 :
Based upon his grave marker information that he died in Wahn, Germany, I speculated that Douglas may have been a "Prisoner of Respite" (held within 30 KM of the front-lines, and treated badly) at the time of his death. This was a new term to me and I looked for any supporting evidence. Based upon the following, I do not believe that this was the case.

His CEF Burial Registration and his service file note he was "Previously unofficially reported Died of Wounds Whilst Prisoner of War, now for official purposes presumed to have Died of Wounds at Kriegsgefangenen Stamnlager Wahn"

However, WeRelate Wiki user DUBOIS, who maintains an interesting blog, provided the following information:
]"May 3, 2013. Although military records indicate he died as PoW in Wahn camp, his death occurred in Valenciennes, on December 18, 1916, as written in the decease's registers of the town of Valenciennes (France) where he is buried. Valenciennes was then occupied territory by German troops, 300km from Wahn. Was he brought back, or if the date of casualty is actually December 17, perhaps he is not gone in this camp? See more details in this blog Although written in wartime, municipal records have been kept up to date, the date of death and the date of writing of the act are strictly observed; this is the original that is online, not a copy."

This place of death is consistent with his burial at the Valenciennes Communal Cemetery.15,13,19

The following biographical information is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal research , April 2017 :
Note that both Douglas and Athol were casualties of World War 1. Perhaps mercifully, their father, William Moffat did not live to witness the the passing of his second son.20

William Moffat was born on 13 July 1893 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG, Manitoba Birth Registration 1893-001103. The 1906 census incorrectly gives his birthplace as Ontario.1,8,5,9 He was the son of William Moffat and Jean Jeffrey Douglas.3,4,5,6,7 Alternatively, he was born in August 1894 in Manitoba, CanadaG, in the 1911 and 1916 census.6,7 Athol died on 21 November 1919 in Ninette Sanatorium, Ninette, Manitoba, CanadaG, at age 26 of phthisis (tuberculosis or similar pulmonary illness.) His Veterans Death Card uses a double "t" in Moffatt, but other millitary records have been corrected to a single "t."1,10,5,11,12 He was buried on 25 November 1919 in St. James Cemetery, Portage Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG.13,14,15
The executors of his estate were his uncles, Thomas James Douglas.16
His name was recorded as William Moffat on his birth registration.4

Athol William Moffat appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the household of his parents, William Moffat and Allice M W Moffat.17 He appeared on the 1906 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces Manitoba in the household of his parents, William Moffat and Maud Moffat.9

Athol Moffatt appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Manitoba in the household of his parents, William Moffatt and Alice M Moffatt.6

Athol William Moffat began military service on 4 December 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaG. His occupation was given as "commercial."18 Athol appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the household of William Moffatt and Maud Moffatt, listed as in the military overseas and his occupation was noted as a collector for a stock yard.7 On 29 November 1916 in German East Afica, Athol William Moffat was injured when pinned by a truck (lorry) that rolled over. The medical report states: "man says he has had malaria from time to time. Since 1915 contracted(?) in E. Africa being in hospital on and off during that time. He states a lorry in which he was[,] capsized[,] it fell on him and afterwards the Doctors told him he had a fractured pelvis, he was treated in different hospitals, finally at Daris-Salaam, was sent to the Union on Dec. 1916. Arrived Cynberg(?) Depot 7/1/17." The report on Sept 18, 1917 indicates that they expected him to be disabled for a period of 6 months.

He served in German East Africa from Feb 7, 1916 to May 11, 1917 when he returned "home" where he remained from May 22, 1917 to Oct 16, 1917. He served in France from Oct 17, 1917 to Aug 12, 1918 when he was again sent home. In both cases, since he was a member of the Imperial forces, "home" was England, not Canada.

Travel orders contained in the Imperial War Service Gratuities (WSG) file dated Aug 3rd, 1918 direct him to Canaples tailhead where he was to embark for Boulogne. From there to London to get orders for Leave to Winnppeg, Canada, sailing on the 16th. He was granted 42 days leave, so ending Sep 27th. This probably means that he returned to England, where he was subsequently discharged after the end of the war, as unfit for furhter service.

His Canadian Circumstances of Casualty form lists his next-of-kin as:
Mrs. T. J. Douglas (sister)
91 Westgate, Winipeg, Manitoba.
This was his aunt and not his sister since this was his maternal uncle's address.19 He was found on a passenger list on 29 August 1918 in New York, New York, USAG, where he arrived aboard "Melita" which departed from Liverpool on Aug 19, 1918. He was a single soldier whose last permanent address was Winnipeg and his destination was Souris, Manitoba.20 He ended military service on 6 February 1919 in Royal Army Service Corps Depot, Grove Park, EnglandG, after serving in German East Africa and France as a member of the British Royal Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport section.

This record does not clarify whether he was present when he was discharged, having returned from Canada, or whether it was an administrative action and he was already in Canada.

The file related to an application for War Services Gratuities made by the execuors of his estate includes a letter that states he "was discharged in England on the 6th of February, 1919, at Woolwich, Dockyard." It further states that his next-of-in was his uncle T. J. Douglas, 91 Westgate, Armstrongs Point, Winnipeg, Man.16,21

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Winnipeg Tribune published in Winnipeg, Manitoba 24 November 1919 :
Corp. Athol W. Moffat, 26 years old, died Friday at Ninette Sanitarium. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon from the home of his uncle, T. J. Douglas, 91 Westgate to St. James cemetery.14

The following biographical information is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal research , April 2017 :
Note that both Douglas and Athol were casualties of World War 1. Perhaps mercifully, their father, William Moffat did not live to witness the the passing of his second son.22

This analysis is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources., April 2017 :
Were there two Athol Moffat/Moffatt's who served in WWI and who were buried in Winnipeg? Or, are records giving his parents as Robert and Isabel Moffatt, Detroit, Mich., U.S.A. incorrect?

I lean towards there being only one which means that once I have sufficient evidence, I will have to submit a correction request to Canada's Veterans Affairs to modify his remembrance record.

Canada, War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty), 1914-1948
According to this record his next-of-kin was Mrs. T. J. Douglas, his "sister" of 91 Westgate, Winnipeg.

(Note that the short notice of his funeral gives the same address, listing T. J. Douglas as his uncle.)

Canada, Imperial War Services Gratuities application
Military documents within this file use several variants of his name: Athol William Moffat, Athol William Moffatt and at least once as Attol William Moffatt.

In this file we see that his uncles Robert Andrew (R. A.) Douglas and Thomas James (T. J.) Douglas, of Winnipeg werre executors of his estate. The were grain dealers.

They would appear to be brothers of Athol's late mother, Jean nee Douglas. Therefore, Mrs. T. J. Douglas (see above) was his aunt, not his sister.

These executors claimed monies from the Imperial War Services Gratuity (WSG) for the estatte. In addition, they reported that they had privately erected a monument in St, James Cemetery at the cost to themselves of $165. The WSG claim was disallowed becuase all of Athol's service had been in Imperial forces, so no monies were owed from Canadian funds. In addition, neither of the claimants were dependents of Athol, so were ineligible to receive WSG. (I don't understand this later point, since they were claiming for the estate, not for themselves as dependents.)

Canada Book of Remembrance and Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The Canadian Virtual War Memorial lists his name as Cpl Athol W Moffatt, son of Robert and Isabel Moffatt, Detroit, Mich., U.S.A. It credits this information to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission attaches two supporting documents:
1) Graves Register Reports (Final) which gives his burial plot number as Grave B, Plot 4, Block 91; and
2) Register for St. James Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba.giving Robert and Isabel Moffatt of 11 Owen Ave., Detroit as his parents

There is a Find A Grave memorial for him as CPL Athol Moffatt, which is apparently based upon the above military record that identifies his parents as Isabel and Robert Moffat.23,24,12,25

"Carswell was born and raised on a farm south of Brandon and took his schooling n Brandon. He went to work for Willson's Stationary until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the war's beginning. After the war, he married Helen Moffat and returned to the staionary business, and was promoted to manager of the store at Fort William, where they raised their boys. They moved to Edmonton and (he) was a partner in Smith Office Furniture, but his partner died and (the) partnership died at the same time.
