Roger Kreutzer records the following:
It is believed he lived in Basznia Dolna, Galacia* Austria but may have originally been from the Swabia area of southern Germany.

Basznia and Reichau were located in what was known as Eastern Galicia, which was under the control of the Austrian Empire from 1772 till 1918. They are now in Poland. On a map showing settlements in this region, dating from the 18th century to 1939, the two villages appear to be side by side. An explanation of Galicia settlements shows that Reichau was established in 1783 and Basznia in the 19th century by Germans.1

Heirs Looking After Great Estates
A telegram from Pittsburg, dated on the 12th inst., made the following announcement concerning the Baker estate:-
Twelve years ago Jacob Baker, of Philadelphia, died childless. His heirs were then unknown, and his estate consisted of fifteen acres in the heart of Philadelphia, on which were a number of valuable buildings, and also large sums deposited in the banks. Since Baker's death the real estate is supposed to have increased a third, and the deposits doubled. The deceased had a number of cousins, and these, with their children, forty in all, have decided to bring prpceedings in the United States Court for possession of the property, which is extimated at $300,000,000.

This, it will be remembered, is the fortune, in the disposal of which, Mr. Elkanah Mayhew, of this village, is interested as on the descendants of Jacob Baker.20

     Other information:
The Jacob Baker Estate was a large hoax or swindle which netted millions of dollars through various Baker family associations throughout the USA, Canada and other countires. As an interested party, Elkanah Mayhew may have been one of the victims of this scam, which charged memberships and other fees to "prove" these individuals had an interest in the fictious estate. It was a very agreeable meeting; begun with plenty oof good things to eat, and winding up with humorous songs and games, and dancing for those who liked it. Victoria Fire Company No. 1 - which in its early days was the original and only fire company of Renfrew, but which is now the upper town, or South Ward, section of the Brigade, - held its annual supper on Monday evening of this week at the Dominion House. The occasion was one of more than usual interest in that a number of the Veterans - those who had been members of the Company in the year of its organization, 1873 - had been invited to participate. Among these were David Barr, Sr., George Eady, Jr., Adam Lindsay, John Scott, Elkanah Mayhew, Andrew Frood, Ben. Lester and William Plaunt.27

Mayhew - In Renfrew, on Thursday, Dec. 1st, 1904, Elkanah Mayhew, aged 68 years.16

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Renfrew Mercury published in Renfrew, Ontario 9 December 1904 :
The late Elkanah Mayhew
On Thursday last, after a year of intense suffering, there passed away into the peace of the grave, Elkanah Mayhew, one of the early natives of the town and one who for all but one or two of his 68 years had lived within the limits of what grew from a few scattered farms into the prosperous town of to-day. Elkanah was born on the farm now owned by Mr. W. A. Mackay on Thomson's hill. As a young man he learned the trade of axemaker in Pembroke, and when The Mercury came to Renfrew, 33 years ago, he was employed at his trade with the late Samuel Francis. Afterwards he was in business for himself until the inroads of wooden machinery made that trade a thing of the past. He had amasses a modest competency; and afterwards enjoyed operating his farm property. Deceased was a Mason, an Orangeman, and at one time a member of the Sons of Temperance; and in all these orders he was noted for his humorous speeches. He looked on the cheery side; and even to the last, when he knew his days would not be long, made many final arrangements with composure. He leaves a widow (formerly Miss Annie Armstrong of the neighborhood of Arnprior); two sons, Henry J., of Colbourne, and William, of Port Arthur, Ont. and one daughter, Maude, at home. The funeral on Sunday afternoon, with Masonic honors, was largely attended. Rev. Mr. Jamieson conducted the church services at the house and grave, and the Masonic service was conducted by R. Wor. Bro. (Rev.) John Hay, W.M., assisted by R. W. Bro. D. Barr, and R.W. Bro. W. M. Dickson. The Boys' Band preceded the brethren in their funeral procession.11

Whiteway - Mayhew
A pleasing event took place at the Union hotel on Wednesday when Miss Maud A Mayhew, only daughter of the late Elkanah Mayhew, of Renfrew, was united in marriage to Mr. Alfred Whiteway, of Winnipeg. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Wm. E. Mayhew, was gowned in white silk organdie with bertha of duchesse lace and carried a handsome bouquet of white roses and maiden hair ferns. She was attended by her little niece, Miss Edna, who was dressed in white silk and carried pink roses and maiden hair fern.

After the ceremony had been preformed, the party sat down to a sumptuous luncheon, and with the best wishes of a large number of friends they took the evening train for Winnipeg, where they will make their future home.

The bride received many pretty gifts including some handsome cut glass, silverware and china. The groom's gift was an old country chain of guinea gold and a pearl brooch. To the maid of honor he also gave a pearl brooch. - Port Arthur Chronicle.8

George Mayhew, 69, unmarried, was found by his brother Stanley when he returned from a shopping trip. The two men lived together at Mayhew Station, about four miles east of Renfrew. Actual cause of death, established by post-mortem, was carbon monoxide poisoning.

The fire was confined to the immediate area where the victim was found and damage to the brick farmhouse was not extensive.22
