Martha Swanzie1,2,3,4,5

F, #768, b. June 1831, d. 12 March 1905
Last Edited6 Aug 2023
She was born in June 1831 at Ireland according to the 1901 census.4 Alternatively, she may have been born in 1832 or 1833 at Ireland according to earlier census enumerations6,5; or, circa 1829 at Ireland since she died at age 76.7 Martha married John Joseph White before 1858.8,4,9,5
Martha Swanzie died on 12 March 1905 at Collingwood, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada, at age 73 of paralysis after 3 months according to Ontario Death Registration 025668.. Her residence was given as Maple Street. Her age was given as 76 and born in Ireland, so if accurate, she would have been born in about 1828. Note that her gravemarker gives her age as 78, meaning she was born about 1827.1,10,11
Martha Swanzie was buried at Trinity United Church Cemetery (formerly Methodist Cemetery), Collingwood, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.11
; and, Martha Swanzey on her grave markter.11 Her name was also recorded as Martha Swansea according to her son William Henry White's death registration.12 She immigrated circa 1834 to Canada from Ireland.4
Joseph and Martha White appeared on the 1861 United Province of Canada Census of Simcoe County, Canada West, enumerated 14 January 1861. Joseph was described as a labourer. Their children, Lavina and William, were listed as living with them. He immigrated from England in about 1850, the last digit is indistinct.6
Joseph and Martha White appeared on the 1881 Canadian Census of Collingwood, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario, enumerated 4 April 1881. Joseph was described as a Teamster and a C (Canadian?) Methodist. Their children, William and Albert, were listed as living with them. As was Cath. Armstrong. There is no indication of the relaltionship of Cath. to the rest of the household. She could have been a servant, or a relative of Martha. Both were shown as Irish in racial origin, while the men were English.5
Joseph and Martha White appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Collingwood, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario, enumerated 31 March 1901, described as a Methodist. Their widowed daughter Levina? White was living with them.4
