Ernest Hartwick from Killaloe Digital Library
Ernest was born on 4 February 1869 in GermanyG 1881 and 1911 census and gravestone. His marriage registration indicates he was born in Germany. Ruth Pilgrim gives his birthplace as Neuwedel in Germany.10,6,7,4,9 Alternatively, he was born on 6 February 1868 in GermanyG 1901 census gives his place of birth as Canada, but if his parents did not immigrate to Canada until 1877 or 1886 (1911 and 1901 census, respectively) then he must have been born in Germany. This is confirmed by his marriage registration which gives his place of birth as "Germany Europe."8 Earnest married Wilhelmina Zummach on 12 November 1891 in Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG, according to Ontario Marriage Registration 010720.11,12,10,13,6,2,7,8 Ernest married Annie Martha Budarick on 10 December 1917 in Killaloe, Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.14,15,16 He died on 6 September 1933 in Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG, at age 64 according to Ontario Death Registration 029282. The informant was Herman Hartwig.10,1,4 Ernest Julius Hartwig was buried on 8 September 1933 in Emmanuel (aka Immanuel) Baptist Cemetery, Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.10,1,17

His name was also recorded as Ernst Gustave Hartwick.18,10 He emigrated with Friedrich Hartwig and Henrietta Splottstosser on 3 October 1877 from Port of Hamburg on the ship Gellert, Brandenburg, Prussia/Preußen (modern Germany); to Canada according to the 1911 census. The 1901 census gives their year of immigration as 1886, but they were included in the 1881 Canadian census, so the former date is probably accurate.19,7,8,4 Ernest Julius Hartwig immigrated on 16 October 1877 to New York, New York, USAG.4 He was listed as a witness to the marriage of August Herman Hartwick and Tina Genow on 7 March 1889 in Killaloe, Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.20,21,22,23,24 Ernest Julius Hartwig was listed as a witness to the marriage of William Edward Berger and Annie W Hartwick on 12 May 1900 in Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG; according to Ontario Marriage Registration 014501.25
In the obituary of Wilhelmina Zummach who died 17 May 1916, Wilhelmina's husband, Ernest Hartwig was listed as a survivor.26 He was the informant on the death registration of the stillbirth of Hartwick on 23 February 1917 in Brudenell Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.27

Census Data

Earnest Hartwick appeared on the 1881 Canadian Census of Hagarty & Jones Twps., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, Fredrich Hartwick and Henerety Hartwick.9
Ernst Hartwick and Minnie appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 31 March 1901. Ernst was enumerated as a farmer and a Baptist. Their children Willie, Charlie F, John J, Henry and Edward were listed as living with them. Also included were his parents Charlie F Hartwick and Henryget (sic) Hartwick. Several years of birth in this census for this household are inconsistent with other sources.8
Earnest Hartwick and Minnie appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 5 June 1911. Earnest was enumerated as a farmer, and a Baptist. Their children Willie, Fred, John, Henry, Edward, August, Ardel, Rinold, Erna and Lila were listed as living with them. As were his parents Frederick Hartwick and Henrietta Hartwick.7
