A Ninth Air Force Reconnaissance Base, Germany -- Sergeant ;obert J. Cave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence P. Cave of 36 Matteson street, Fredonia, N. Y., is serving with a Ninth air force unit, the 67th Tactical Reconnaisance (sic) group, recently awarded a Presidential unit citation, highest organizational decoration awarded in U.S. armed forces.
Sgt. Cave is with a squadron of 67th group commanded at time of Presidential recognition by Colonel George W. Peck, Detroit, Mich.. Presently commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Leghorn, of Winchester, Mass., Sgt. Cave has participated in the battle for Europe since early in the Normandy campaign.
Using P-38 Lightning planes, completely unarmed, Sgt. Cave's squadron earned the original citation with other units of the group. His squadron was later awarded a cluster to the Presidential badge "for missions flown at minimum altitudes along Normandy beaches immediately preceding Allied landings."
Formerly employed with the American Locomotive company, Cave enlisted in the armed service in October, 1942, attending army technical schools in aircraft engine maintenance. As assistant crew chief of a P-38 Lightning, Sgt. Cave has served with his squadron in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He wears four battle stars on his European Theater of Operations ribbon in addition to the Presidential recognition badge.10 S/Sgt. Robert J.
