Obituary of Jean Orr Jeffrey
Died May 19, 1902
There died a few days ago in the township of East Nissouri, Mrs. Jane Jeffrey. Her death deserves something more than a passing notice. She lost her husband by accident in Scotland and came out to this country a widow with six children. She lost two [one?] of her children on the way out. She settled on lot number five in the 13th concession of E. Nissouri in 1842 and remained in that township until her death.

Mrs. Jeffrey had attained the extraordinary age of ninety-seven years, one month, and 18 days. She had been confined to her bed for a considerable period. She lived and died a good Christian woman, a member of the Presbyterian Church, an amiable and kind woman. No one ever heard her say a bad word about a neighbor -- or anyone else -- and when a neighbor or friend went astray or did anything wrong -- her words about them were not words of condemnation, but words of pity and sorow. She lived on friendly terms with her neighbors and was willing at all times to help them in sickness or death -- and she was always a comfort and consolation to them in trouble. The life that she lived was a life of peace with God and man and her end was peace. She will be kindly remembered for years to come by all those who were acquainted with her. She leaves three children to mourn her loss.1

Christina Orr was buried on 29 May 1899 at North Embro Cemetery, Embro, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.1
The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Woodstock Sentinal Review published in Woodstock, Ontario 26 May 1899 :
... the death of Mrs. Eben Sutherland at her home on St. John Street this morning. The Congretaional Church has lost one of its most saintly members . . . living to the age of 86. She was one of a long-lived family. Her mother, Mrs. Orr, having been a centenarian of East Nissouri a little more than 29 years ago, and her sister Mrs. Jeffrey is still living at over 90 in the same township.

It is fitting that the King of Terror should shorten his darts in claiming a life so long lived. The last two weeks seemed to watchers to be spent in communion with her Creator, into whose presence she was soon to be ushered. The periods of recognition of those by whom she was surrounded, were filled with affection for all whom she hoped to meet again. As a dispenser of God's gifts to her she was widely known. Both she and her husband Eben has seen death and change often. Eben was one of the native clan of Sutherlands of East Nissouri and West Embro who came from distant Scotland. Of her seven children only three survive: Miss Kate with whom she lived, Mrs. Mary Orr of Michigan and Alexander of Fort William who arrived a few days ago. The burial will take place at North Embro Cemetery at 4 p.m. on Monday.1
