Canadian Military Service - WWI

     John Read Wood of Delisle began military service on 30 December 1915 at the age of 18 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 96th Battalion, Canadian Highlanders. He was a student with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 10" tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, John Frank Wood of Delisle, Saskatchwan. He was assigned regimental number 204116.¹
     On 26 September 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit enmarked on the "S.S. Laconia" arriving in England on 06 Oct where they were transferred to the 92nd Battalion. He was assigned to the Canadian Machine Gun Depot.⁷
     On 8 February 1917, He went to France to join the Canadian Machine Gun Pool, and on 22 Feb he was posted to the 7th Machine Gun Company. This company was absorbed into the 3rd Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. (C.M.G.C.) on 19 Mar 1918, where he was prompted to Corporal on 01 May.⁸
     On 23 February 1918, He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery.⁹ Sgt. John Read Wood M.M. ended military service as part of general demobilization on 29 March 1919 at Toronto, Ontario, Canada, after serving with the 3rd Battalion Canadian Machine Gun Corps.
