FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN CALIFORNIA
     Mrs. W. S. Mattocks. 55. Had Been In Poor Health Some Time.
     Mrs. W. S. Mattocks. 55 years of age, a resident of Atchison prior to ten years ago, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Smart, Atchison rural route No. 2, died this morning in a hospital at Los Angeles. Calif., according to a telegram received by Atchison relatives.
     Mrs. Mattocks had been in poor health for some time. and is understood to have been in the Los Angeles hospital for a week or more. before she passed away.
     Mr. and Mrs. Mattocks lived at Santa Cruz, Calif., prior to leaving Atchison. Mr. Mattocks was for many years an engineer on the central Branch.
     Funeral services will be held at Wilmington, Cal., probably Monday. A Mrs. Mattocks is survived by her husband ; by four sons. George Mattocks, of Arizona, William Mattocks, of Wilmington. Calif., and Edgar and Douglas Mattocks, of New York City ; her parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Smart, of Atchison, two sisters, Mrs. Henry Hartman, Atchison, rural route No. 2, and Mrs. Dora Parker, Mexico,Kas. : a brother, Douglass Smart, of Atchison, and three grandchildren, Miss Addle Mattocks, Ed Mattocks and Wallace Mattocks. of Atchison are sister and brothers of W. S. Mattocks.
     Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hartman are planning to leave tonight for Wilmington, Cal., to attend the funeral seervices.3

Mattocks were included on a passenger manifest for the "Cretic" dated 8 August 1919 departing from. They gave their destination address as 816 South Main Street, Santa Ana, California New York, New York, USA. They were traveling with the Headquarters Detachment of the 80th Infantry Brigade, 40th Division. They departed from Bordeaux on 20 Mar 1919, aboard the "Irelandia" bound for Hoboken, New Jersey where they arrived on 05 Apr 1919. On this outbound passenger list, they gave their address as 3736-A St. Louis Ave., St. Louis, Missouri. His serial number was 1631453.9,15

He entered the hospital a week ago yesterday for treatment of a kidney complication, Mr. Mattocks (photo) WALLACE MATTOCKS had been a patient in the hospital three times In the past year. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:30 at the Sawin & Dyer chapel with the Rev, C.F. Stolz officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon cemetery. Mr. Mattocks was one of Atchison's best known and most popular citizens. He had been connected with railroading since his boyhood when he was a messenger at the Fifth street office for the Missouri Pacific. A son of ELI Mattocks, a brakeman for the Santa Fe, and Mary Liddle Mattocks, Wallace Mattocks was born March 6.1883, at 1312 Commercial, his life-long home. His parents came to Atchison from Lawrenceburg, Ind. As a young man. Wallace Mattocks learned telegraphy in the Missouri Pacific offices here. He worked for the railroad in Atchison, Stella, Neb., Omaha and other places. For a while he was a telegrapher for the Burlington at Omaha. For two years he was a telegrapher in Kansas City for the Terminal railroad at the Union depot. and was employed at a local auto agency several years. In 1944 he became a tele-

His hobbies were ice hockey ; and baseball. When Kansas City had an ice hockey team, he seldom missed a game, and was acquainted with many of the players. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal church and of the Railway Telegraphers association. He was never married. He leaves three sisters, Miss Addle Mattocks, Miss Gertrude. Mattocks and Mrs. Charles R. (Elizabeth) Kew, all of the horne; three nephews, Charles E. Kew, president of the Kinetic Dispersion Corp., Buffalo, N.Y., Edgar S. Mattocks, Pismo Beach, Calif., and William S. Mattocks, Los Angeles. Two brothers preceded him in death, William S. Mattocks, Santa Cruz, Calif., and Edgar E. Mattocks, assistant cashier of the Exchange National bank here.

     A native of Pocatello, Idaho, he came here 32 years ago. Surviving him are his widow, Gertrude E. Mattocks; two daughters, Robin Marilyn and Mary Ann; two brothers, William A. and Edgar b. Mattocks. His home waa at 2863 Gainaborough dr., San Marino.8
