Inquest Into Plane Tragedy Is Postponed
Coroner Defers Probe of Sudbury Incident Thursday
Sudbury Aug 4 — Postponement until further notice of the Inquest into the death of Milton McEwen, 23, of 209 Cedar street was ordered by Coroner G. A. Henry ,M.D., Thursday afternoon, after hearing five witnesses. Postponement was due to the absence from the city of Dr G R Jones who attended the deceased man following the accident on July 23.
Over In Second
Evidence submitted Thursday afternoon Indicated that McEwen walked into the whirling propeller blade of an airplane motor shortly before 2 o'clock on the afternoon of July 23, as he was assisting Stan Baxter, of 12 Copper street, adjust the motor preliminary to removing the fuselage to Larch wood for assembly .
"It was all over In a spilt second," declared J. W. McCormick, 13 Copper street, who witnessed the accident from the kitchen window of his apartment. "I heard the prop hit him with a sickening thud."
According to Olaf Ingolfsrud, of 104 Minto street, the deceased man had turned to move away from the plane and had misjudged his distance, walking into the whirling blade.
McEwen had been knocked to the ground unconscious and was bleeding. A towel was wrapped about his head to staunch the blood and he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he died between 4 and 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
Recalled to the witness stand, Stan Baxter told the coroner. in reply to questions by E. D. Wilkins, K.C. Crown attorney, that Inspector Saunders of the Department of Transport had visited the scene of the accident and instructed that no test flight were to be made until further notice from the department.6
