The following article appeared in the Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg Free Press, 27 May 1946 :
Headline: Boy's Drowning Mars Week-End
...Norman Charles Zummach, 15, of 522 Richmond street, drowned in Ormand's creek at the foot of Wolesley avenue at 5 p.m. Sunday while four young companions, unable to help, looked on.
...
While two young girls and two boys looked on, powerless to help, young Zummach drowned in Omand's (sic) creek at the foot of Wolesley avenue and Raglan road, about 100 yards from its junction with the Assiniboine river.

The body was recovered at 5:30 p.m. from eight feet of water by four constables who came in answer to a telephone call to the police, places by Norman Denyer, 736 Goulding street and Lloyd Owen, 726 Goulding street.

For a number of hours the drowned boy remained unidentified. However, the police finally succeeded in establishing his identity after making an extensive inquiry throughout the district, armed with a complete description.

Dr. L. O. Fryer, provincial coroner, arrived on the scene at 6:15 p.m. tnd (sic) after examining the boy pronounced him dead. The body removed to Thompson's funeral home.

The lad was first noticed in difficulty by two girls, Ainsely Phelps, 10 and Joyce Matthews, 10, both of 489 Craig street. They saw his head bobbing up and down in the river. The girls immediately ran to find help and came upon the boys who phoned police.

On the arrival of police constables C. Watling, George Young, Ernest Dobbs and Leonard Smith, a canoe was borrowed from A. D. Volume, 480 Stiles street. With the aid of the children, who pointed out the spot where the boy was last seen, the body was recovered and taken to shore where artificial respiration was applied until the arrival of Dr. Fryer.7
