     The following biographical information appeared at the family tree database of Anne Stevens; viewed, 9 September 2006:
Thomas came to Owen Sound in 1852 and bought a distillery. He was elected to the Town Council in 1857 and served as Mayor in 1868. At the first general election for the Ontario Assembly after Confederation, Thomas, a Conservative in politics, defeated the Liberal candidtate. He was re-elected in 1871 and 1875. He was succeeded by David Creighton, a Conservative and editor of The Times in Owen Sound, who later moved to Toronto.

According to family tradition, Thomas was the brother of George Scott, whose two sons, Charles and Henry walked to Owen Sound to borrow the money from their Uncle Thomas to buy the mill at Melville. They walked back to Toronto to register the deed and then walked home to Melville.2
