George refused to beat the slaves and was dismissed from his position. We next find him as a miller in Brooklyn, N. Y in the directory for 1850,and the family then made their way via Lake Champlain to Canada, eventuall to Melville, Caledon West Twp., Peel Co., Ont.
When George died, his obituary in the Orangeville Banner stated that he was self-educated and could read Latin and Greek as well as he could English and had a great interest in education in the area.4
She wrote:
