Her name was also recorded as Mattie.1
The following biographical information was shared at the James Smith family genealogy report by Michael Peacock, 14 July 2001:
Hugh took the middle initial "Z" as a young man to avoid confusion with other Hugh Smiths in the community. This information came in a letter from his son Stuart B. Smith dated 1st December 1998.

In this same letter there was a copy of a letter, from Martha Smith, to Hugh Z Smith. There was no date or address. Martha was a daughter of John Colville Smith.

At Home
Dear Hugh
I have been looking up family history & have found a few things about your family I will pass on to you before I forget.
Robert Smith, your grandfather, was born on a farm called Moy - near Campbeltown Scotland May 16th 1829 and later moved to Bleachfield. He left Scotland in June 1851 and came to Cincinnati, Ohio. Married Kate Stewart Oct.12th 1854. In 1855 they came to Argyle Illinois & rented a farm from John Smith for 3 years - Hugh was born Feb.14th 1858. Andrew must also have been born before, but it is not recorded. Hugh, in passing the place in later years, pointed out the house where he was born. It was in ruins. After leaving the Smith farm they came to the Adam Keith farm, which joins our farm on the north. Agnes was born there in 1860 & died in Seward in 1862. They were in the Keith farm 3 years & then bought the old home in Seward from Alfred Bridgeland.
I told you wrong about Uncle Archie. He did not come from Scotland with them, just your grandfather & my father came together.
Archie was born Jan. 1st 1856 went to Australia & stayed 3 years, then came back to Scotland & spent a winter, then came to America in May 1860. Went directly to the Robert Smith home on the Keith farm & was there till setting up for himself in Seward. He bought 80 acres from Alfred Bridgeland June 7 1869. Sold the same to Robert Smith in Feb. 12th 1869 and moved back to Argyle - His wife was desperately home sick & had to get back near her folks.
This is a short history of your grandmother - Kate Stewart. She was born 12 miles from Campbeltown July 20th 1824. Left Scotland May 14th 1851 at the age of 26. She was on the ship 7 weeks. Arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio soon after & stayed two years. Married to Robert Smith & then on to Argyle.
I hope you can make sense out of all this. "All the best" to you both

Sincerely Yours,
Mattie Smith.1
