Research notes (July 2019):
There are two references to William Redtman in The Buffalo Commercial newspaper of 1910 and 1911. He was married to a daughter of Rev. John Stumpf, and was a foreman on a contract related to the construction of a barge canal in the Tonawanda area. This was part of the Erie Canal system first opened in 1825.
Was that a reason Ferdinand was there at the time of the 1910 census?
It is interesting that Rev. Stumpf died of smallpox in 1911. I didn't realize it was still prevelant at this time.5
