He was born circa 1854 at Brandenburg, Prussia/Preußen (modern Germany).4
William Boehme died on 12 November 1912 at Radcliffe Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, tailor.1,2,5,4
He was the informant on the death registration of Mrs. Fred Grosklage, who died on 5 September 1899.6 William Boehme was referenced in my notes for Robert Pachal; He was taking the body of his brother-in-law, John Herman Brown, home to Fort Stewart, Ontario for burial. John had died of an accidental gunshot wound while hunting near Yorkton, Saskatchewan. A councilman from Combermere, William Boehme persuaded the captain of the Mayflower to make one more run from Barry's Bay to Combermere before putting up the steamer for the winter. During this trip, the Mayflower sank in a matter of seconds, taking nine (9) lives, including Robert's.
Four passengers survived the sinking by clinging to the crude wooden box containing John Herman Brown's coffin. They were:
- Joe Harper
- John Imlach
- Gordon Peverly
- John Patrick O’Brien (59), died of hypothermia after reaching Gull Island
They reached Gull island, a small rocky island, after several hours in the frigid water and the three survivors were rescued nearly 24 hours later.
This incident was featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not, as well as in Peter Unwin's book, "Canadian Folk: Portraits of Remarkable Lives"
Those that perished were:
- John Charles Hudson - Captain / owner (46)
- Aaron Parcher - Pilot (28)
- Tom Delaney - fireman / engineer
- William Boehme (58)
- George Bothwell (27)
- William Murphy (55)
