     Sgt Leonard C. Stavenow ended his military service on 15 January 1945 at England when his plane crashed. He was rear air gunner aboard Halifax LK878 during takeoff and landing training when his inexperienced pilot tried to circle the field after the starboard engine failed. They impacted on some heights near the airfield. Leonard was the only survivor of the crash, possibly because the rear turret broke off during the impact. Local residents pulled him free but were unable to get him to hospital due to deep snow. Eventually military rescuers got him to Northallerton Military Hospital , where he died shortly after arrival..
