Life is a silent struggle for deaf Harvey.
(by) Frank Jones
My Canada Gazeteer Atlas lists Schutt, a village northeast of Bancroft, as having a population of 25. Palmer Rapids, the next settlement up the road, has 132. On a bright, frosty day last week I drove the 300 kilometres from Toronto to these two little communities to talk to two men who, in my book, are heroes.
They're not the kind of guys who win medals. Harvey Schutt Just ran the village store and Bruce Junop is a farmer and machinery on the side. They're Just ordinary, everyday heroes, the kind you'd find in just about any Ontario village.
Let me tell you about Harvey first, and I'll get around to Bruce in tomorrow's column.
Ups and downs
The Schutts came from Germany about 1875 and they must have been regular mountain goats because the village that bears their name feels as if it were built on a camels two humps -- all ups and downs and breathtaking vistas. Today there are two pretty churches and a village store bearing a plaque saying it was established in 1903 and a sign saying, "closed."
Harvey was born the year his parents opened the store, but as he grew up he gradually became deaf. He was good at figures, had gumption besides, and when he was 21 he opened a garage. He showed me the 1924 calendar still hanging in his kitchen: "H. E. Schutt, Ford Dealer, repairman and licensed driver."
About the time he married Florence, a local farm girl, Harvey decided there was more money in trucking and lumber work and switched. To this day they say Harvey can't hear a thing but he always knows when there's something wrong with the friggin' truck. "He feels it in his feet," Florence explained.
Harvey was employing 25 men and managing fine as long as Florence was there to take the phone orders. Then, In the 1940s, his parents died, he sold his lumber business and they reluctantly took over the store and post office.
There wasn't as much money to be made running the store; they had to stay open until 10 at night, got only one day off a year — Christmas — and dealing with the public was to Harvey a kind of purgatory.
If he'd lived in the city perhaps he would have had more help, but to this day Harvey lip-reads imperfectly, his eyes darting in panic when he thinks he's missed something. They had forms printed up so customers could tick off what they wanted, but Florence always had to be there to answer the phone.
Lost without her
He was lost without her. When he had to go into hospital for an appendix operation she had to stay with him for 10 days while the older of their six children ran the store. From small, the children seemed to recognize their father lived in a special, cut-off, silent world, and would take his hand protectively. In turn, one of his greatest enjoyments was rocking them in his arms when they were tiny.
From behind their counter Harvey and Florence saw a revolution take place in the rural way of life. When they took over the store in 1945, you couldn't buy bread, milk or butter in their area because the farm families produced their own. Today none of the farmers milks, and they nearly all buy their diced bread and dairy products in the supermarket in town. Thats why you see so many village stores boarded up today.
Four years ago, Harvey reached the mandatory retirement age for postmasters — 75 — and since then they've been trying to find someone else to run the store.
A son and then a daughter tried it, but found they could earn more working in the city. And who needs those long hours!
Harvey and Florence took me into the empty, ice-cold store that's been closed now for about a year. "The stock used to be up to the ceiling," said Florence.
"I miss it badly sometimes," said Harvey. He refused to sell the meat slicer and the scales, hoping someone will some day open up the store again.
"But it was a hard life," said Florence.
Why had they done it then? I asked.
"Why?" Harvey looked puzzled. "I had to make a living, didn't I. We had six children to bring up." His features dissolved. "And I never heard their voices."
Florence said nothing, but a large tear formed and ran down her cheek from beneath her glasses.10
