FUNERALS OF TWO VICTIMS HELD TODAY
     Combermere in Mourning for Departed Citizens.
     Mayflower Wreck; Located Yesterday Afternoon.
Government Diver Ordered to Scene to Search for Bodies---Three Survivors are In Ottawa, Little Worse for Their Experience.

     Combermere Nov. 16.--Two of the victims of the Steamer Mayflower tragedy were burled here today and there will be three other interments in the nearby vicinity on Sunday.
The funeral of Patrick O'Brien and of Captain Parcher were held and were largely attended as they both were welt-known, throughout the district.
     Tomorrow at Rockingham near here the last marks of respect will ba paid to William Murphy.
     On Sunday, also there will ba a pathetic scene at Wingle, a small place a few miles from here, when Robert Pachal and H. Brown of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. will be burled side by side. . They have relatives there. and it was for interment that the body of Brown was shipped east from Saskatchewan. Pachal came in charge of it, and as announced met his death on the vessel, so that tomorrow the two brothers-in-law will be buried side by side.
     Now that the missing steamer has been located word has been sent to the Marine and Fisheries department at Ottawa, requesting that a diver be sent here. It is thought that the other bodies will be found either in the vessel cabin or pinned down under part of the wreck.
     The accident is the talk of the countryside, and there is the greatest respect expresses. If the pulse of public opinion here as any thermometer of the general feeling there will have to be a most thorough governmental enquiry.
     Mr. H. W. Chamberlain, President of the F. J. Castle Co., of a which firm the late George H. Bothwell was a traveller, came to Barry's Bay on Thursday along with Mr. Fitzgerald, the firms sales manager and organised a search party to look for the body of the dead traveller. Yesterday a party of six, two of whom were Messrs. Harrison and Maple, of the Department of Militia, and who were close, personal friends of Mr. Bothwell went out and searched the river and its banks the whole day but found no bodies, or the boat, the report appearing in an Ottawa paper that the boat was found being incorrect.
     Last night by attaching the ends of a wire between two boats and letting the middle hang loose and by this means trolling along the river the sunken boat was found. The boat is about 1,000 yards from what is known as the Patcher Point, and is about 700 yards from the small island where the survivors were found. The top of the smoke stack la only 18 Inches under water. This would mean that she sank In about 20 feet of water.
     A Sad Farewell.
     The survivors left Combermere yesterday morning at about ten o'clock. Mrs. Hudson, mother of the deceased owner of the Mayflower, at whose hotel the survivors were oared for, and her daughter bore up wonderfully well but when the survivors took farewell the two ladles broke down completely.
     On the "Ruby" with them were their friends who had travelled up to Combermere with clothing, etc. Among these were A. A. Imlach, brother of one of the survivors, G. B. Harlock, of the General Supply Company, George Milford of Smith's Falls, brother-in-law of Mr. Harper, and Reeve W. H. Bromley of Pembroke, who had hurried to Combermere as soon a he heard the news of the disaster, in order to give what assistance he could to the survivors and to the relatives of his fellow County Councillor, Reeve Hudson.
     There were also on board several men on their way to search for bodies At eleven o'clock the tug was opposite the Island where the survivors had been picked up. It Is a small low lying island, about half an acre in extent. It has only one tree but has some low shrub. Altogether It looked to be a bleak and shelterless spot. The searchers who had two row boats with them left the tug at this point and began their sorrowful search, under the direction of Hal Hudson, brother of the dead reeve. The wind was however very strong and it was considered unlikely that much progress would be made until the two hours before dark when the wind falls.
     Passed the Island.
     The survivors looked long, at their little island where they had spent such a hard time, and explained to their companions once more the manner of their being found. The cheerfulness which had possessed them all morning and which was being fostered by their companions could hardly be kept up, and as Barry's Bay was approached the high nervous tension began to give way. Anxiety and eagerness, to meet their wives who awaited them at the hotel at Barry's Bay began to tell on them, but on the whole they kept up wonderfully.
     Mr. Peverley and Mr. Harper suffered quite a little from the vibration of the boat an the wounds on their feet and legs.
     Passing the scene of the disaster the passengers of the tug saw the Castle Company search party, some of whom were on shore.
     Mr. Imlach reached Ottawa on the train which arrived at about five o'clock. Messrs. Peverley and Harper with their wives arrived at 7 last night. There were large numbers of friends of each at the station to greet them.
     The Department of Marine and Fisheries last evening sent instructions to their diver at Smith's Falls to report in Ottawa this morning with his suit and other tackle in order to go to the scene of the disaster.²⁰

Although the above news article speaks of them being buried side-by-side, it appears this did not occur. I don't know if Wingle where the Emmanual Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery is located.²¹
