She was born in July 1872 at Darlington, Clarke Twp., Durham County, Ontario, Canada, age 38 at the time of her second marriage and in the 1911 census.1,4,2 Alternatively, she may have been born on 1 July 1871 at Ontario, Canada, according to the 1901 census5; or, circa 1879 at Ontario, Canada, according to the 1921 census.6 Mary married William Scorgie on 3 March 1895 at Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, Mary is registered as Mary EE Rain according to Alice Sparrow, but she believes this might be a transcription error for "Ram."1,4,7,8,5 Mary married Peter Moffat on 14 June 1911 at Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, in the Manse.1,3,6
Other information from their marriage registration:
Mrs. Mary Moffatt of R.M.D#2, Oshawa, ON was listed as next-of-kin on his mother Albert's conscription papers; Regimental number 3235531, declared himself as a Presbyterian and a Farmer at the time of his enlistment.9 Mrs. Mary Moffatt of R.M.D#2, Oshawa, ON was listed as next-of-kin on his mother William's conscription papers; on his Particulars of Recruit form of Jun 4, 1918 in Toronto when he was drafted he declared that he was a Presbytreian and Farmer.10
She was commonly known as Elizabeth Scorgie according to the 1901 census.5
Elizabeth appeared on the1901 Canadian Census of Whitby, Ontario County, Ontario, in the household of John Scorgie.5 Mrs. Scorgie, of Oshawa, ON, was the informant on the death registration of her husband, William Scorgie, who died on 7 February 1910.11
Mary Scorgie appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Whitby Twp., Ontario County, Ontario, enumerated 5 June 1911. Mary was described as a widow and head of the family on a farm. Her children William and Albert were listed as living with her. Peter Moffett was a labourer on her farm.2
Mrs. Mary Moffatt appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Whitby Twp., Ontario County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1921. Mary was described as head of the hosehold and her occupation may be read as "farm milk". Interestingly, her 2nd husband Peter, and son, George Scorgie were listed as farm labourers and lodgers in her household. She gives a year of immigration (1863) before she was born, so may have been indicating when her parents immigrated.6
