Brief Illness Suffered at Iowa Home of Daughter Claims Resident of This Community on Sunday —Two Sons Here are Left to Mourn.
An illness of three weeks duration on Sunday claimed the life of Mrs. Harriet Valentine Townsend at the home of a daughter in Oelwein, Ia. where she had been visiting since Thanksgiving-time. She was 74 at her passing.
Mrs. Townsend. resident of Sycamore and the community since 1877, was widely known here by many friends.
She was born on Aug. 10. 1861 at Kindenbrook. N. Y., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Shaver. The family came to this locality in 1877 to reside. In 1880 the daughter Harriet was wed to George Valentine who, it is recalled, met death in 1908 while walking4along the railway line west of Sycamore in a blizzard.
In 1911, Mrs. Valentine married W. H. Townsend who preceded her also, several years after their wedding.
Surviving Mrs. Townsend are three sons. Richard and John Valentine of Sycamore and George E. of Aurora; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Townsend of DeKalb and Mrs. Rollin Butler of Oelwein. Mrs. M; Adee of Esmond and Mrs. Virgil Hopkins of Brooklyn, Wis. are sisters. There are also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who grieve.
Funeral services for Mrs. Townsend will be held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at the M. E. church here, Rev. C. H. Draper officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood.3
