WILLIAM MCCOY DEAD
     Nortonville suffered an inestimable loss last week in the death of one of its most honored and best beloved citizens, Wm. McCoy.
     Mr. McCoy was born in Harrison County, Ohio, October 6, 1838, and died at his home in Nortonville October October 2, 1012. Had he lived until the following Sunday he would have been seventy-four years of age.
     On November 6, 1859, he was married married to Miss Tirzah Borland, and to this union six children, five sons and one daughter, were born.
     During the civil war Mr. McCoy was a member of the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In the year of 1868 he came to Kansas, and the following spring moved to of Nortonville.
     On May 3, 1875 his wife died, leaving him the care of their five little boys, the youngest being only two years old. Mr. McCoy did what few men do under similar circumstances, kept his children together and made a home for them.
     On March 14, 1878 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Clara A. Hays, who died March 27, 1899. In the spring of 1890 he left the farm and moved to Nortonville where he has since resided. January 21, 1902, he was married to Mrs. L. E. Conkey, who with his four sons, Wm. B., of Roswell, N. M., Charles E., of Meriden, George W., of Valley Falls and James E., of Nortonville, Nortonville, survive him.
     For over forty years Mr. McCoy has been Identified with the best interests of this community. He was a loyal citizen, a genuine christian, a staunch supporter and faithful member of the Methodist Epicopal (sic) church, a kind and loving husband and father. In fact very few men either merit or receive such universal respect and admiration or worthily hold so large a place in the life and heart of their community. His loss will be keenly felt by his many friends and neighbors, but especially by his church and loved ones.
     Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Saturday, October 5, at 2 p. m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. T. B Adell, assisted by Rev. M. B. Kelly. The church was tastily decorated with potted plants and beautiful autumn leaves. The pulpit was draped with a large flag and the casket was loaded with cut flowers, everything harmonizing so with the life service and character of Mr. McCoy that nothing was lacking that could have been added to make it more beautiful or appropriate. A long line filled with comrades, neighters (sic), friends and loved ones accompanied the remains to the cemetery, where kind and loving hands laid It to rest.

"There is no death; The stars go down
To rise upon some fairer shore,
And bright in heaven's jeweled crown
They shine for evermore.

There Is no death; An angel form walks o'er the earth with silent tread;

He bears our best loved things away,
And then we call them dead.

And where He sees a smile too bright,
Or heart too pure for taint and vice,
He bears it to that world of light,
To dwell In Paradise.

Born unto that undying life,
They leave us but to come again;
With joy we welcome them the same,
Except in sin and pain.

And ever near us, though unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread;
For all the boundless universe
Is life -- there are no dead."

(note that punctuation in the following is preserved as printed in the newspaper)
     Obituary
     Mrs. Clara A. McCoy was born at Warsaw Ky. Nov. 3, 1839, and died at her home in Nortonville Kansas March 27, 1899. Her maiden name was Clara . Frazier. With her parents she moved to Indiana, where she was united in marriage to Ezra Hayes Sept. 1, 1859. who died at Valley Falls March 22, 1872. Of this union three children were born, of which Alvin B.Hayes is the only one that servives (sic) his mother. On March 14, 1878 she was united n marriage to Wm. McCoy at Valley Falls.
     Mrs. McCoy was a kind and affectionate wife and mother, and was loved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
     She had been a member of the M. E. Church for 30 years and her faith and confidence failed her not during the long period of her sickness. Since last Oct, she had been confined to the house and much of the time to her room. Though there were a complication of troubles that seemed to baffle medical skill, she was patient and fully resigned to Providence. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on the 28, conducted by the writer, assisted by Rev. S. M. Hood. A large number of friends and neighbors, were present to extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
     The choir furnished some very appropriate music for the occasion, and all that was mortal of our friend was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Nortonville.
     This removed another one of our old and respected citizens, but their memory shall be kept green and cherished with due consideration.
     E. F. Holland.2
