Wounded Rcpats Get Royal Welcome From Cheering Crowds At Station
Bearing the scars of their wounds received in the battles In France since "D"' Day, 19 Canadian army personnel were given a tumultuous welcome at Union Station last night. One other repatriate, an air force man, invalided home through illness, was also greeted by the large crowd. In addition to representatives of the various war services organizations, on hand to see that the boys were made welcome were Mayor Stanley Lewis; Lt.-Col. R. Taylor, officer commanding No. 3 District Depot: Lt.-Col. O. H. Ellis, in charge of repats at N.D.H.Q; Lt.-Col. M. Grison. acting area commandant; Major B. D. Armstrong, Protestant chaplain, and Captain E. A. Killarn, Roman Catholic chaplain, for the Ottawa area. Adding a martial air to the occasion was the Central Army Band under Captain Knight Wilson. Captain M. Sutclifle was conducting officer, with Lt. C. Dukelow who received the parade. With their usual unflagging devotion to the needs of this war's veterans, members of the Canadian Legion, together with the Legionettes, were on hand with their hot coffee and other comforts to make the boys feel at home....
Cpl. A. H. Kuehl was wounded in France on the 13th of July while in action in Normandy. He suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his thigh and foot. On hand to greet him were his parents Mr. and Mrs. John W. Kuehl, his wife Mrs. Eileen Kuehl. Cpl. kuehl had been overseas just 16 months to the day when he arrived at Union Station last night to be greeted by his family.7

Ottawa Gives Warm Welcome to 18 Repats
Hearty cheers rang through Union Station last night when Ottawa welcomed home eighteen of her soldiers from overseas. All of the men were battle casualties from France, many having served overseas for five years. Some of the men were carried to ambulances on stretchers, but the majority were able to walk into the concourse where they were given a tumultuous welcome.
Families, friends and hundreds of onlookers had waited from wight until ten o'clock for the hospital train to arrive. As it pulled into the station, many of the women broke into happy sobs, after what had seemed two very long hours of waiting. Then, after Mayor Lewis had welcomed the men briefly, and the band was playing the national anthem, neither barriers nor army guards could restrain the crowd as they rushed forward. Tears were streaming down many cheeks.
The Ottawa and district men were:...A. H. Kuehl, Killaloe Station...8

This is a rabbit hole that Gerry and I went down hwile looking for details on Archie Thompson's 3rd daughter, Gladys. As it turned out, Gladys Edith Thompson is not of interest to our research

Hi Rick,

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~murrayp/muskoka/watt/ufford/colmer1.jpg(note - this website is no longer available Sep 2020)
And Ancestry has Gregory's birth reg:
Gregory William Colmer, b 09 Jun 1910 in Park Road, Brantford Twp., Brant, Ontario, s/o Frederick Charles Colmer (machinist) & Caroline Sowder* - they married Jan 1, 1903 in Waterloo.
Note that Gladys was born before the 1918 marriage of Elsie Pearl Jacks to Archie Wylie Thompson so I'm not certain whether Archie is Gladys' birth father. Also, Gladys is not shown in the 1911 census with Elsie - her Ont. Birth Reg. says she was the d/o Allen Es. Thompson & Edythe Louise Haw (but I have not discovered how Allen related to Archie).
I believe Caroline's maiden name is actually Souder based on her birth registration, the 1881 census and her obituary:

MRS. FREDERICK C. COLMER
After an illness of about six weeks, Mrs. Frederick Colmer passed away at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, on Oct. 23 at the age of 75. The deceased was born in Waterloo County on Dec. 5, 1879, Caroline Souder, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Souder. Mr. and Mrs. Colmer came to Bowmanville in 1919 from Brantford where Mr. Colmer was a machinist with the Brantford Scale & Slicer Co. With J.H. Needham and the late George Brown, Mr. Colmer came here to set up the Bowmanville Scale & Slicer Co. and he worked tehre until it was closed about 1930. Mrs. Colmer's interests were in her family of three boys, her home and church. She was a member of Trinity United Church and an active worker in the Women's Association and Women's Missionary Society. She was also a past president of Bowmanville Women's Institute.
Mr. Colmer predeceased her in August, 1939, when he met a tragic death in a car accident at Brighton. Mrs. Colmer has no brothers or sisters surviving, being the last member of her family. Her three sons survive: Harold and Herbert of Bowmanville, and Gregory of Bracebridge. Funeral service was held in the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville, on Oct. 25, and a service was also held at the Hill and Robinson Chapel, Brantford, the following day, both conducted by Rev. T.A. Morgan of Trinity United Church, Bowmanville. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Brantford. Many lovely floral tributes spoke of the esteem in which Mrs. Colmer was held...
