Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Patrick Joseph Fitzgerald of Asquith began military service on 3 July 1916 at the age of 23 at Asquith, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 196th Overseas Battalion, Western Universities.. He was a public school teacher with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 10" with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Patrick Fitzgerald of R.R.#2, Indian River, Ontario. He was assigned regimental number 911049.²
     On 31 May 1917, he began service in France with the 46th Battaion, Canadian Infantry. He was gassed on or about August 23, 1917 and returned to duty the next day.² Pte. Family Background:
     According to the Asquith history, Jens and Anna Jensen left Denmark in the early 1900's, emigrating to the U.S.A., where they settled in Wisconsin. Two sons, Robert and a younger brother, Axel came with them from Denmark. While in Wisconsin, three more children were born. In 1906 they came to Canada, settling in the Eagle Creek district. Eight more children were added to the family there.

     Robert enlisted in 1916 and went overseas to France. He was killed in the trenches near Carency about 12 days before the Battle of Vimy Ridge.^3,4
