Lorne, or Loran, his wife and daughter came from the U.S. to Saskatoon in 1905. By 1911 he was a real estate broker. These were boom years in Saskatoon, but they came to an end with the recession of 1912. It took another 50 years before the market recovered to the same level. Lorne was a city councillor in 1911 and 1912. He was still a broker at the time of his early enlistment for WWI. He survived the war, and continued to live in Saskatchewan.5
Lorn N. LeValley began military service on 27 October 1914 at the age of 41 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 28th Battalion. He was married with one child. He gave his occupation as a broker. He had both militia and military experience. He was described as being 5' 9 1/4" with grey eyes, grey hair and a fair complexion. He was 41 years, 10 months old, so on the high end of the age scale for recruits.. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his wife, Edith M LeValley who lived in Asquith or near by and then later, in Saskatoon. He gave her address as Boc 523, Saskatoon on his Attestation papers. He was assigned regimental number 73003.4
On December 1914, at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, he had a hernia that developed during his physical training but he did not report it to the Medical Officer. It was controlled with a truss.6
On 29 May 1915, at Montréal, Québec, Canada, his unit embarked for England aboard the "S. S. Northland."6
On 18 September 1915, He went to France as an Acting Sergeant with the 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was hospitalized twice, first for bronchitis from 24 Feb 1916 to 01 Mar 1916. Then he had a contused heel requiring treatment from 9 Apr 1916 to 13 Apr 1916. At this time he was a Lance Corporal. He was granted furlough to Canada from 5 March 1917 to 28 May 1917 and he sailed on the "S. S. Metagama." His destination was Asquith.4 Sgt. Lorn Norris LeValley ended his military service on 28 February 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, from the 105th Special Services (Canadian Defence Corps) as medically unfit due to pulmonary problems related to his hospitalization for bronchitis in February and March 1916. He also had "myalgia" from "exposure" in France in 1915.
His name was also recorded as Loran N. LeValley according to his marriage registration.3
