     Carl Brandvold died on 15 December 1969, in a local hospital, at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 77.⁴

Family Background:
     The Erland and Kari Brandvold family farmed near Asquith. They came from Minnesota. Two sons, Henry (see Chapter 3) and Carl enlisted but Henry then "defaulted", failing to report for service.
Other comments:
     At the time of Carl's enlistment, he signed his name as "Brandwald." Most of Carl's service file uses this spelling, although there are occurences of Brandvold as well. His papers were witnessed by Werner Bostrom (also documented in chapter 3.) In 1924, Carl married Lillian Smith who was from Arnprior in Renfrew County.
     It is interesting that of the three Asquith men that the Star Phoenix reported as enlisting on June 26th, 1916, two of them, Colin Holgate and Andrew Nodvedt later deserted. Carl Brantholm (sic) was the third enlistee.² Carl Brandvold witnessed the beginning of military service of Andrew Nodtvedt.⁵

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Carl Brandwald of Asquith began military service on 26 June 1916 at the age of 24 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 223rd Overseas battalion (Canadian Scandinavians). He was unmarried and a farmer with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 9 1/2" with fair hair, light brown eyes and brown hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, L. (sic) Brandwald (sic) of Asquith. He was assigned regimental number 294521.²
     On 14 May 1917, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his troopship S.S. Justice sailed, and arrived in Liverpool, England on May 14, 1917. He proceeded overseas to the 107th Battalion, Pioneer Canadian Engineers. On Jan. 14, 1918 he was appointed Lance Corporal (L/Cpl). He was hospitalized with influenza on Oct. 28, 1918, was invalided to England and released Nov. 18, 1918, so he learned of the armistice while in the hospital.² L/Cpl. Carl Brandwald ended military service as part of general demobilization on 13 February 1919 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada,
