Canadian Military Service - WWI

     John Alfred Haviland of Asquith was conscripted on 22 November 1917 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 1st Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. He was a farm labourer with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5'9" tall with blue eyes, fair hair and a fair complexion. On his conscription papers he listed his next-of-kin as his father, E. S. Haviland of Asquith. He was assigned regimental number 256234.1
     On 21 January 1918, at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, embarked on the "S.S. Scotian" and may have stopped in Halifax, leaving there on 27 Jan 1918. They disembarked in Liverpool, England on 06 Feb 1918.1
     On 8 August 1918, he joined the Canadian Machine Gun brigade (C.M.G. Bde.) in France. About 6 weeks later on 28 Sep 1918 he received a gunshot wound to his left thigh. He was invalided to England on 01 Oct 1918 and was not discharged from the hospital until 9 Jan 1919. On 20 Feb 1919 he embarked on the "Royal George" to return to Canada where he was transported to a Saskatoon hospital.1 John Alfred Haviland ended military service as part of general demobilization on 12 March 1919 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada,

     Willis Haviland was the eldest son of Edy and Margaret Haviland. He enlisted 26 Jun 1915, and served in Canada. He spent at least two months of his service on "farm leave." Like many men raised in relative isolation on rural farms, he contracted measles shortly after joining up, and was hospitalied from 15 Jul 1918 to 12 Aug 1918. Then in March 1919 he was hospitalized for mumps for nearly three weeks.1

     TENTATIVE IDENTIFICATION: I have found no records of a John Hawkins enlisting from the Asquith area. William Hawkins is the most apparent identification since he was farming in the Sonningdale area. After the war, he returned to Stayner, Ontario. In 1933, he married Hilda Janzen hwo was the head opereating room nurse at the Saskatoon Sanatorium. They resided in the Stayner area until their passing. At the time they married, he was an insurance agent.8

     William Randolph Hawkins of Sonningdale was conscripted on 25 June 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 1st Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5'9" with a fair complexion, brown eyes, dark hair. On his conscription papers he listed his next-of-kin as his father, William Hawkins of Stayner P.O., Ontario. He was assigned regimental number 3353453.1 Pte. William Randolph Hawkins ended military service as part of general demobilization on 3 February 1919 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada,

     Curiously, this news item was not published until the first anniversary of their wedding.6

     In the obituary of Hilda Dorothy Janzen who died 9 November 1989, her husband, William R. Hawkins, was listed as predeceased.9
