John Franklin McPhedran of Biggar P.O. began military service on 17 April 1916 at the age of 24 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 96th Battalion, Canadian Highlanders. He was an unmarried lumberman with no prior military experience. He was described as being 5'7" tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, John MacPhedran of Wyoming P.O., Ontario. He was assigned regimental number 204747.2
On 27 September 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit embarked on the "S.S. Laconia", disembarking at Liverpool on 06 Oct 1916 where he was appointed an Acting Lance Corporal (A/L/Cpl) and joining the Canadian Machine Gun Depot. He became an Acting Sergeant (A/Sgt) on 13 Jun 1917 and then reverted to his permanent grade before going to France on 09 Nov 1917.2
On 17 November 1917, at France, he joined the 16th Canadian Machine Gun Company. On 19 Dec 1917 he was promoted to Sergeant. On 1 Sep 1918 at Arras, he received a shrapnel wound to his left foot, later amended to his left ankle. By this time, his father had moved to Croswell, Michigan. He was invalided to England and was discharged from hospital on 13 Dec 1918.2
On 5 February 1919, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he disembarked from the "Baltic."2 Sgt. John Franklin MacPhedran ended military service as part of general demobilization on 4 March 1919 at London, Ontario, Canada, when he was discharged as medically unfit due to his wound. He intended to reside at 515 Ave. G. South, Saskatoon.
He was commonly known as Frank McPhedran.7 His name was recorded as John Franklin McPhederan on his birth registration.3

Family Background:
The William and Catherine McKenzie family moved to the Eagle Bank district near Asquith in 1905. They had 2 daughters and 7 sons. It was Mrs. McKenzie that suggested the name "Eagle Bank" for the new school district in March 1906. They named their farm "Eagle Bank Farm." Their son John (Jack) donated 2 acres for the school location. Their daughter Jean had come to Canada in 1898 and lived in Manitoba. She returned to Scotland in about 1903 and encouraged her family to move to Canada. When she returned, three of her brothers, Peter, William and John accompanied her. John filed on a homestead in the Eagle Bank district and took out one for his father as well. His parents and the rest of the family came out in 1905. Three of the younger sons, Harry (Sept 1914), Charles (Mar 1916) and Allen (Nov 1916) enlisted during WWI. Various service file entries show that Mrs. McKenzie's address was changed several times, including Medicine Hat and Cranbrook, B.C.

Charles and two other brothers, Harry and Allan served during WWI. He began service in 1916 with the 96th Battalion, Canadian Highlanders but was later transferred to a labour battalion. He received a shrapnel wound to his right ear in 1917. In 1918 he requested a transfer to 1st Division Motor Transport Corps to be with his older brother (unnamed, but probably Harry.)7

In the death of William McKenzie the district of Eagle Bank lost one of its earliest pioneers. Deceased was born in Banffshire, Scotland, in 1852. He came to Canada with his wife and family in 1905 settling about 35 miles west of Saskatoon where he has since resided.
Mr. McKenzie is survived by his widowed daughter, Mrs. Jean Leech-Porter, and by seven sons: William, of Medicine Hat; Jack of Grenfell; Peter, of Trail, B.C Harry of Powell River, B.C; George of Beatty; Charlie, of Grenfell, and Allan, of Adarville, Cal. He was predeceased by his wife in 1919 and by his youngest daughter, Lizzie, in 1918. For the funeral Eagle Bank school remained closed during the day in respect to the deceased. Prayer was heard at the deceased's home from where the procession moved to the United Church at Asquith where the service was held. Rev. H. Sangwine officiated assisted by Rev. F. B. Richardson of Perdue. Five of Mr. McKenzie's sons, William, Jack, Peter, George and Charlie, with Bert White, acted as pallbearers. The funeral was attended by a number of old timers, also by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Andrews of Maidstone and Mr. and Mrs. Bert White of Kinley. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. White both being nieces of the deceased. Interment was made in the Asquith cemetery. Lovely floral tributes were received.8
