Asquith and District Honour Roll:
"Pask, Edmund" died on the field of honor of Dunfermline, Saskatchewan.
Commemorated on the Asquith Cemetery WWI Plaque:
E. PASK
Family Background:
Edmund was the second oldest son of James Albert Pask and his wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) née Kellett. Their oldest son, Albert, died at 6 years of age. Their youngest son was Wilber, a well known maker of "cupboards" during my childhood years in Asquith. There were also two older sisters, Maggie and Carrie. James and Lizzie were born in Ontario but both moved to the Territory of North Dakota. They married there in January 1889 about 11 months prior to North and South Dakota being granted statehood. All of their children were born in North Dakota. In 1907, they moved to the Dunfermline district where they farmed. James died of cancer in 1933 and Elizabeth died in 1940.
Other comments:
Edmund volunteered in April 1916 and by September was in England and in France a month later. Just over a year later he was severely wounded in action during the Passchendaele offensive and died of his wounds within hours. The regiment's war diaries show that it was a "fine and fairly quiet day." However, one lieutenant was gassed, 2 other ranks were killed in action, 2 other ranks were evacuated to casualty clearing stations (probably including Edmund) and 19 other ranks were wounded. Earlier, his regiment had been engaged in actions at Vimy, the Somme and Hill 70; so he was probably a veteran of all of them.5,6
Edmund Pask of Dunfermline, Saskatchewan began military service on 7 April 1916 at the age of 20 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 212th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 7 1/2" with a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his mother, Elizabeth Pask of Dunfermline P.O., Saskatchewan. He was assigned regimental number 261142.1 On 18 August 1916 Edmund Pask wrote his will leaving all to his mother, Elizabeth Pask. George Geall, also from the Dunfermline district, signed as a witness to his will.7
On 18 September 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit sailed on the "S.S. Olympic" arriving at Liverpool on the 25th. He had been transferred to the 97th Battalion 3 days prior to embarkation.8
On 22 October 1916, he was transferred to France joining the Royal Canadian Regiment.9 Pte. Edmund Pask died of wounds on 30 October 1917 at the area of Poperinghe, Belgium. His "Circumstances of Casualty" form reads:
"Died of Wounds"
(Gun shot wounds, fractured Left Leg, and Hand.)
At No. 3 Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Elsewhere in his file it shows he had a "fractured R. Femur and a shattered Left Leg"
End of Military Service section.10,4
Edmund appeared on the 1900 Federal Census Fremont Twp., Cavalier County, North Dakota in the household of his parents, James and Elisabeth Pask.11
Edmund Pask appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of RM of Park No. 375, Saskatchewan in the household of his parents, James and Lizzie Pask.2

Father* | (?) Mahoney1 |
Last Edited | 10 Mar 2020 |
He was born on 29 September 1888 at Dublin, Ireland.1
Introductory Overview:
Michael Mahoney is not included in the Asquith and District Honour Roll for WWI.
Other comments:
Michael Mahoney was born in Ireland, but was living at Asquith at the time of his enlistment in Aug 1916. In Jan 1917 a new medical examination determined he had defective vision and flat feet, so he was reclassified and transferred to the Saskatchewan Railway Construction Company for Military District 12 (Regina.) This new assignment must not have been satisfactory either, because he was discharged in July 1917.1
Michael Mahoney of Asquith began military service on 1 August 1916 at the age of 27 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 217th Battalion. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous military experience. His initial medical found him "fit" for service. He was described as being 5' 7" with a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. He was assigned regimental number 276509.1 On 5 December 1916 Michael Mahoney wrote his will leaving all to his "best friend", of Craigmont, Ontario.1
On 2 February 1917, at Saskatchewan, Canada, after a Medical Board determined that he had defective vision and congenital flat feet, he was transferred to the Saskatchewan Railway Construction Company.1 Pte. Michael Mahoney ended his military service on 21 July 1917 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, for being "irregularly enlisted." He was rated as being of "good" character so his discharge was related to his physical impairments. All of his service was in Canada.
