Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Charles John Allbon of Springhill, Nova Scotia began military service on 21 March 1916 at the age of 19 at Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, joining the 106th Battalion, Nova Scotia Rifles. He was an unmarried clerk. He was described as being 5' 11 3/4" with a medium complexion, Blue eyes and medium brown hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Charles J. Allbon of Springhill, Nova Scotia. He was assigned regimental number 716004.1
     On 28 April 1918, he was promoted to Lieutenant with the 17th Reserve Battalion.6 Charles John Allbon ended military service as part of general demobilization on 23 May 1919

     After his discharge he came to Perdue, Saskatchewan where he apprenticed to the local publisher, H. D. Gay. By 1922, they had taken over the Asquith Reecord as editors and publishers.7,8
     The following article appeared in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Saskatoon Daily Star, 7 August 1922 :
ALBON--MATHER
     Miss Agnes Richardson Mather, only daughter of Mr. Christopher Mather, of Asquith, and the late Mrs. Mather, and Capt. Charles J. Allbon M.C, also of Asquith, were married at 6.30 o'clock Saturday evening, August 5. at the home of the brides uncle and aunt. Mr. arid Mrs. C. L. Mather. 215 Eleventh Street, Saskatoon. Rev. H, Hamilton, of Bradwell, performed the ceremony.
     The bride, who walked with her father, was attended only by a little flower girl, Erie May Peat. Mrs. H. D. Gay, sister of Captain Allbon, played the Wedding March.
     Captain add Mrs. Allbon left on the 11.40 tram Saturday night for the Maritime Provinces, where they will spend their honeymoon. Upon their return west they will live tn Asquith, where Captain Allbon is editor of the Asquith Record.
     These were guest at the wedding; Rev. and Mrs. H- Hamilton Mr. and Mrs. 8. F. Butzer, Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Peat. Mr. and Mrs H. D. Gay, Miss Jessie Millar. Miss Nellie Sillers, Miss Evelyn McLaughlin, Miss Jean Mather, Miss Marguerite Mather. Miss Muriel Wilson, Mr. Robert Millar, Mr. Jack Bowles. Mr. Hartley Mather. Mr. Cecil Mather, Mr. R. P. Cuspie.5

     On Thursday evening, 26 December 1957 the business district of Springhill, Nova Scotia was destroyed by fire. This included the premises of the Springhill Record, owned by Charles J. Allbon since 1928. The related newspaper article tells us he was 61 years old.
     Fast forward to 1973...Springhill was recovering. The population dropped from over 7000 to 5200. New businesses and institutions had come to town. C. J. Allbon's newspaper, the Record had grown to 2 sections, and he published a weekly for a nearby community.
     In July 1975 another business district fire destroyed the offices of the Record. He was still publishing at age 79. He appears to have retired shortly after this becasue in 1976, he was described as being retired.9,10,11
