Peats Bachelor Farm At Asquith One Of The Best
The farmstead of Thomas Peat, Guild, Canadian National Railways, the man who usually wins the grand championship at Saskatoon and Regina bull sales is surely the most extraordinary bachelor farm layout in Saskatchewan. The house itself is quite modest but it Is surrounded by 20 acres of lawn, yards, garden, orchard and root fields, the whole enclosed in one of the tallest, thickest and finest shelterbelts to be seen in the province.
The belts and cross belts include in all over 11.000 trees, maple, ash, elm, Cottonwood and come conifers and the greater part was planted in 1904 and 1905 and has been given careful attention. The fruit trees include big crab-apple trees with trunks of at least seven inches diameter, large numbers of plums and cherries. Along with these are bush fruits, currants and gooseberries. The plum trees are well covered with fruit but there are not many crab apples this year. Last year the crop was heavy and Mr. Peat finds that one seldom gets two good crops of apples in successive years.
FARMS 1600 ACRES
This farm of 1,600 acres is situated four miles south of Asquith and was on Wednesday the scene of a field day arranged by the Asquith Agricultural Society. Nearly 400 people gathered to honor Mr.Peat and to hear demonstrations by Rupert Ramsay of the extension department of the University of Saskatchewan and W. McGillivray of the provincial livestock branch on agricultural horses, Shorthorn Holstein, Angus, and Ayrshire cattle. The evening was spent pitching horseshoes and playing Softball.
The Peat farming activities centre around the beef Shorthorn herd which usually numbers about 100 head, on the majority of Asquith farms dairying is the main stay, but beef is the aim in this herd. And there is no doubt that these cattle are built to produce beef.
Seen in the brome pasture the cows seem built to just clear the grass and are broad as well deep with short beef type necks and heads. The present herd sire is Village Brown, a bull of Browndale breeding. Mr. Peat has chiefly confined his show activities to the Saskatoon and Regina bull and cattle sales but may show at Saskatoon fair this year. He has had a brisk demand for young bulls this year and has sold all the eleven that were ready and has had to disappoint later inquirers.
130 ACRES WHEAT
On the whole 1,600-acre farm Mr. Peat has only 130 acres of wheat this year. Oats occupy 600 acres. He usually feeds some oats in the sheaf but the bulk are threshed.
He has three-quarters of a section in brome grass of which a half section will be cut for seed and a quarter section for hay. There are also brome pastures of 30 and 40 acres
This successful feeder believes in the use of roots and men were at work this week with the hoe on the turnips and mangolds. There is a two-acre field of each inside the shelter belt. He finds the turnips easier to grow than the mangolds which require more moisture for germination. Some of the latter were slow in starting this year.
He usually Keeps about 20 Yorksnire sows and explained that the reason he was growing no barley this year was because he had some granaries full of it.
Among the 500 visitors on Wednesday were Sid Johns, Saskatoon; Robert Thomas, Grandora: A Schleedy, Maple Creek: A. G. Sinclair, Canadian National Railway colonization department and J. D. Guild, Canadian National Railway agricultural agent. Local stockmen who helped by loaning cattle were C. R. Wade, H. McNab and A. Wheeler, who loaned Aberdeen Angus, Holstein and Ayrshire cattle respectively.5
