PETITION.— A very strong petition was signed by the Reform party for the purpose of granting the Post Office to Miss Margerette Gardner. sister of the late Mary Gairdner, who recently held the said office for a term of years. Miss Gairdner, who is Conservative, is very popular and received the strongest support of the Liberal party, who were u successful in returning the Post Office to the said Miss Margarette Gairdner. The citizens agree with the that this act is very inconsistent with characteristics of the Conservative party when it can be learned that Mr. Jas. Thompson as Division Court Clerk and Mr. John Ferguson as Bailiff have received their dismissal and their places being filled by Conservatives.1

     R. H. Fortesque Gardner is remembered on a grave marker/cenotaph at Bayfield Cemetery, Stanley Twp., Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Note that while there is a cenotaph refereence to him in this cemetery, there is no detailed gravemarker yet known.5,1
Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner was also known as R. H. Fortesque Gairdner.8
He was commonly known as Fortesque Gairdner.15 His name was recorded as Rev. Robert Hutchison Fortesque Gairdner on his death registration.5

Robert Hutchinson Fortesque and Minnie Laura Black appeared on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, Ward 3, enumerated 1 June 1900, described as a clergyman.6
The following article appeared in the Grand Rapids, Michigan The Grand Rapids Press, 19 May 1906 :
GOES TO CHICAGO
The Rev. R. H. F. Gairdner Has Made Decision.
     HERE NINE YEARS
Vestry of Grace Church Made Efforts to Retain Him.
Will Take Charge of St. Martin's in Chicago — Has Been Prominent in This Diocese.
The Rev. R. H. Fortesque Gairdner, of Grace church, has decided to accept the call to Martin's church, Chicago. The news of his decision will no doubt be received with deep regret by his parishioners and the city in general.
Mr. Gairdner has been in the diocese eighteen years. He was rector of Trinity church, Niles, for nine years and rector of Grace church of this city nine years. He has been a member of the board of missions and the standing committee for
(photo) The Rev. R. H. Fortesque Gairdner.
most of those years and is now president of the standing committee. He has been elected and served as deputy to the general convention for several terms.
Mr. Gardner ahs (sic) also odne (sic) much philanthropic work outside the church. His broad sympathies reached beyond the confines of the church. He is well known among the newsboys and gave them many helpful talks at the "Happy Hours." He was a member of the board of the City Rescue mission and was actively interested in the Y. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. A.
Prompt action was made along several lines to retain Mr. Gairdner as rector of Grace church. The vestry was unanimous in raising his salary to meet that of St. Martin's. It was, however, the plan of the vestry to do this before knowing anything of the call. His many friends in and out of the church have made efforts to retain him.
     Has Done Good Work Here.
In speaking of Mr. Gardner's decision to accept the call to St. Martin's church, Chicago, Bishop Coadjutor John N. McCormick sald:
"Mr. Gairdner has been eminently successful as the rector of Grace church. His work among the young people and the children has been especially strong. He has shown great ability in conducting the finances of the church and the indebtedness has been greatly decreased during his administration. The work of the church has been conducted upon practical, systematic lines and Mr. Gairdner's decision to accept the call and leave the work which he has built up so successfully is a matter of deep regret."17

Robert Hutchinson Fortesque and Minnie Laura Gairdiner appeared on the 1910 U.S. Federal Census of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, Ward 35, District 1513, enumerated 18 April 1910, described as a minister in a parish. They had been married for 19 years, so her age is understated.7
     R. H. Gairdner, of Bayfield, was the informant on the death registration of his sister, Catherine Hutchison Gairdner, who died on 26 July 1910.18
The following article appeared in the Buffalo, New York The Buffalo Times, 14 April 1918 :
Aged Minister Weds S. S. Teacher, Girl Was Missing
CHICAGO, Ills., April 13.— Samuel Gaylord, father of Gertrude Gaylord, 25, missing from the city, said recently he had heard she is married to the Rev. R. F.(sic) Fortesque, Gairdner, 60 years age.
Miss Gaylord is a Sunday school teacher in St. Martin's Church, Austin, of which the Rev. Mr. Gairdner formerly was pastor.
Dr. Gairdner resigned last November and has since been living in Niles, Mich. Mr. Gaylord said that just before his daughter disappeared, she received a long distance telephone call from Niles.
Dr. Gardner gained wide publicity in the summer of 1916 when he was arrested in a Detroit cafe with Anna Stearns, Chicago's "mystery girl."
This story alludes to the story of Rev. Gairdner trying to help a young woman that was found to be a thief. After he was found in Detroit, vestrymen from his church met him and believing in his innocense returned with him to is church. I have chosen not to reproduce the sensational press items current at the time.13

Robert H. F. and Gertrude Gairdner appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania, Ward 3, enumerated 10 April 1930, described as Pastor of Trinity Church. Their daughter, Elizabeth T., was listed as living with them. They were reported to be 55 and 22 respectively when they married, which understates their ages.19
The following article appeared in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph, 6 June 1931 :
Washington Pastor Ill. Resigns Post
WASHINGTON, Pa., June 6. — The Rev. R. H. Fortesque Gairdner, who for the past, nine years has been rector Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church here, has tendered his resignation. Mr. Gairdner has been health for the past several months. He expects to leave Washington in July for a year's rest and study at his boyhood home in Bayfield., Ont., Canada.20

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Niles Daily Star published in Niles, Michigan 11 January 1932:
NILES FRIENDS LEARN OF DEATH OF FORMER EPISCOPAL RECTOR
Word of the death on Christmas day of the Rev. Robert Hutchison Fortesque Gairdner, late rector of the Trinity church at Washington, Pa., at the family home in Bayfield, Ontario, Canada, has been received here. The Rev. Gairdner was at one time rector of Trinity Episcopal church in Niles and it was during his rectorship that the present rectory was built for his occupancy.
The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gairdner, deceased, a prominent pioneer family of Bayfield, Ontario. He received his early education in Montreal and was a graduate of old Trinity college, Toronto and of Huron college, London. He was ordained into the ministry of the Church of England in Grace church, Brantford, Ontario, by the late Bishop Hullmuth, of Huron. Among his charges were those at Niles, Grace church, Grand Rapids, Church of the Redeemer, Loraine, Ohio, St. Martin's, Chicago, and Trinity church in Washington, Pa.
He resigned from the latter charge after a pastorate of over nine years, on July 1, owing to his ill health and returned to Bayfield with his wife and daughter, Elizabeth Tudor. He is survived by the widow, who formerly was Miss Gertrude Gaylord of Chicago, his daughter, two brothers, Dr. Thomas Gairdner of Waca (sic), Nebr., and John Tudor Gardner of Bayfield, Ont. The funeral services were held from his late home on the Monday after Christmas.
The services in the home and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. F. H. Paull, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, assisted by the Rev. Myers of Seaforth, Ont.2

The late Rev. R. H. Fortesque Gairdner, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was recorded as the bride's father at the marriage of James Richardson Scott and Elizabeth Tudor Gairdner on 22 July 1944.21
In the death registration of Elizabeth Tudor Scott, who died on 9 January 1950, Robert Gairdner was identified as her father.22 I don't currently plan to document this family line any further. It is not of primary interest to me.23
Caution: do not confuse first cousins, Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner and Robert Hutchison Gardner.24
     Research notes (3 October 2025):
Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner and Robert H. Gairdner appear to be the same individual. If so, Sarah J. Sutton would be his first wife.
However, she remarried in 1892, and was recorded as a widow, so the 1931 date of death for Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner is a problem. On the same page as her second marriage registration, the preceeding entry was for a divorced woman. Does this mean Sarah would have admitted to a divorce, or was it socially better to be a "eidow."25

Robert H. Gairdner1

He was born circa 1856, Bayfield, Huron County, Canada West (modern Ontario), United Province of Canada.1 Robert married Sarah J. Sutton on 27 June 1883, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.1
     Research notes (3 October 2025):
Robert H. Gairdner and Robert Hutchinson Fortesque Gairdner appear to be the same individual. If so, Sarah J. Sutton would be his first wife.
However, she remarried in 1892, and was recorded as a widow, so the 1931 date of death for Robert H. Gairdner is a problem. On the same page as her second marriage registration, the preceeding entry was for a divorced woman. Does this mean Sarah would have admitted to a divorce, or was it socially better to be a "eidow."2
