Death of Mr. David Halliday
While for the past two years it has been known that the strength of Mr David Halliday, one of Horton's early settlers, had been gradually declining, still the news of his demise on Sunday evening, came suddenly upon the community in which is his time he had held a somewhat prominent position. Mr. Halliday was born on the 14th of December, 1810, at Anderston, on the outskirts of Glasgow, and came to Canada in 1849. He was one of the earliest school-teachers in the township of Horton. After teaching there a time, he removed to Western Ontario, where he continued in the profession for a few years. Then he engaged in store-keeping until the time he came back with his family to settle on the old homestead in Horton in 1871. He took a very considerable interest in political matters, and was for many years President of the South Renfrew Reform Association, retiring from the post voluntarily on account of increasing years. He was also for some years chairman of the Board of License Commissioners. He was also a staunch Presbyterian, and when in health was a constant attendant of St. Andrew's church, Renfrew. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Campbell; and the interment was made in the Renfrew cemetery. The deceased was the eldest of a family of ten, three of whom survive him - Mrs. Margaret Mayhew, of Manitoba, Mrs. Jennett Weir and Miss Esther Halliday, of Renfrew. He leaves a widow and three sons, James A., of British Columbia, David, now living near Chatham, Ont., and Thomas, on the homestead, and one daughter, Mrs. R. L. Jamieson.8
