The following biographical information appeared at the FTM user home page of Jill Mauthe, 22 July 2001:
Henry's dad died before he was born in 1873. His mother died when he was 3 months old. Henry was raised by his uncle Peter Schick, who lived in the same village. At the age of 8, he went to live with another uncle, William Kreutzer, also in the same village. He attended school for about four years.
At the age of 14, Henry began his apprenticeship in blacksmithing. He continued this until age 22, moving from one village to another. At 22, he was drafted into the Austrian army. He continued blacksmithing in the army, moving as the army did until age 25.
In the meantime, Mr. Abram S. Friesen had asked Barbara's father if he knew of a blacksmith who would be willing to come to Canada. Mr. Mauthe suggested Henry. It is not known if Barbara and Henry knew each other in Austria, but even if they didn't, Wilhelm Mauthe must've known Henry.

Military Service

Heinrich Kreutzer began military service circa 1895 at Austria drafted into the Austrian army as a blacksmith..3
When he was 8, Heinrich went to live with his Uncle Wilhelm Kreutzer, son of Freidrich and Margaretha. He only attended school for 4 years, and at age 14 (about 1888) started his apprenticeship as a blacksmith.3 He was confirmed on 8 April 1887 at Reichau, Austria.1 He immigrated in 1898 to Canada from Austria. Family sources think he may have deserted the army and stowed away on a ship bound for Canada.3
His son Ronald wrote that his father arrived in Steinbach, Manitoba in Nov 1898 and began working as a blacksmith for Peter Towes. Prior to this, he had met a member of his uncle Fred Schick's family. He may have stayed with this family for a time after his arrival in Canada. In the 1901 census, there is a Frank Schick, age 28, household in Winnipeg. There is also a Fredrick Schick, age 28 and a son-in-law of Jacob Ott in Assiniboia district (Saskatchewan.) Either one of these could be the relative mentioned above, but the Winnipeg connection is likely more probable since he settled in Manitoba, rather than Saskatchewan.3
Heinrich estalished his own blacksmith shop in 1905.4
