Clear Lake, May 9 - Lawrence Maitland, Clear Lake, was arrested by Officer O. T. Wooldridge Thursday night charges with intoxivcation, resisting an officer, and using profane and obscene language.

At the hearing Friday morning before Mayor Ward he was fined $25 on one charge and 30 days in jail on the other. He was taken to the city jail Thursday night where he has remained until he can pay his fine.8

Born in Black Earth, Wis., Jan. 3, 1861, she was married at the age of 20 to Iver Edmundson who preceded her in death about 20 years ago.

Surviving are 10 children, Mrs. George Chase of Canada; Mrs. Carrie McMinn of Princeton, Minn; Matt Edmundson of Hayfield; Mrs. Ida Zobel and George Edmundson of Clear Lake; Tilda Maitland of Ventura and Albert Edmundson of Winona, Minn; Edward Edmundson of Madelia, Minn.! SOLDIER DIES IN OWN-MADE HELMET
     TACOMA, June 12. (AP)--Trapped under a float when a home-made diving helmet he was using failed to work. Thomas M. Matland, 19, Fort Lewis soldier, drowned in American lake near here late yesterday.
     Matland was dragged from beneath the float by a fellow-soldier. Artificial respiration failed to revive the youth, whoso home was in South Minneapolis, Minn.
     Fort Lewis officers said Maitland "was using an improvised diving device -some kind of helmet" when the accident occurred.7

     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Minneapolis Star published in Minneapolis, Minnesota 16 June 1939:
Services for THOMAS MAITLAND, 18, 333 E. Thirty-eighth street, will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at Flynn-Wagner mortuary, 3541 Lyn-dale avenue S. Burial at Parkers Prairie, Minn.
     An army private, he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. He drowned when an Improvised diving hel met, failed.
     Surviving are the stepmother, Mrs. Leota Maitland: three broth ers, Harvey, Walter and Henry; two step-brothers, Robert and Charles; two sisters, Lola and Helen; one half-sister, Barbara.5


     The funeral service of Thomas M. Maitland was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota 17 June 1939
     Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Maitland, sr., Mrs. Tommy Maitland and baby, accompanied Mr. and Mrs. V. M. Gerht (sic) and daughters and son to Minneapolis Saturday where they attended the funeral of the former’s grandson, Thomas M. Maitland whose accidental death occurred a week, ago Sunday at Ft. Lewis, Wash. They returned to Nashua the same day, and Sunday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Gehrt returned to their home at Bradgate, Iowa. Mrs. J. S. Peterson and son of Storm Lake, Tommy Maitland, jr., and Mrs. Laura Crooks and sons who had gone to Minneapolis earlier in the week, returned to Nashua Monday noon, they having gone to Parker's Prairie, Minn., where interment was made Sunday.8

Military Service

     Robert Lee Crooks began military service on 17 March 1943 at the age of 18 included in the March 1943 draft from Chickasaw County, Iowa.4,7
     Robert L appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Des Moines, Lee Twp., Polk County, Iowa in the household of his parents, Herbert and Laura M. Crooks.2
     Robert L appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Nashua, Bradford Twp., Chickasaw County, Iowa in the household of hismother, Laura Crooks.5
     Robert Lee Crooks, grandson, was referenced in a newspaper article about Thomas Laurence Maitland and Emma Oral Braga on 24 December 1941 at the newspaper the Nashua Reporter.8

Pfc. Robert L. Crooks Gives Life in Holland
Nashua - Pfc. Robert L. Crooks, son of Mrs. Laura Crooks, Nashua, and Herbert Crooks, Chicago, who left with an armoured division for overseas in December, landing in England, was killed in action in Holland, Feb. 26, 1945, according to a telegram received by the mother Wednesday. He entered the service March 17, 1943, and trained at Cape Polk, La.

He was born at Ames July 13, 1924, and came to Nashua in 1931 with his mother, making their home with Mrs. Crook's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Maitland.

In 1940 he was graduated from the Nashua high school and at the time he was inducted into the service he was employed at Rath's, Waterloo.

Surviving are his parents, one brother, Pvt. Ralph, with the marines in the South Pacific, and the grandparents.4


     Robert Lee Crooks was referenced in a newspaper article about Laura M. Maitland on 9 January 1946 at the newspaper the Nashua Reporter.9
