He was born on 11 October 1856 at Colborne, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County, Canada West, United Province of Canada.1 Alternatively, he may have been born on 13 November 1856 at Colborne, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County, Canada West, United Province of Canada, according to his Find A Grave memorial page. Note that it gives his birthplace as Colborne, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, but I don't think the county is correct. (March 2022)2,3,4,6,10,7,9; or, in October 1858 at Canada West, United Province of Canada, according to the 1900 census.11 Robert married Effie L.      Robert Maitland died on 19 July 1937, near Ventura, at Lake Twp., Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, USA, at age 80.1,18,7,9 The informant on his death registration was his daughter, Rosina Hyde. His wife was identified as Adeline E. Fox.1
Robert Maitland was buried on 21 July 1937 at Amsterdam (Avery Twp.) Cemetery, Avery Twp., Hancock County, Iowa, USA.1,7,9,19
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1861 Canadian Census of Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County, Canada West in the household of his parents, James and Mary Maitland.4

In the obituary of Sarah Renwick who died 12 September 1894, his son, Robert Maitland was listed as a survivor.20
Robert and Adeline Elizabeth Mailland (sic) appeared on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Rockford Twp., Winnebago County, Illinois, enumerated 1 June 1900, described as a painter - house. Their children: Rosa D. and James R., were listed as living with them. He immigrated in 1870 and was naturalized. They had been married for 7 years. She had had 2 children with both living at this time.11
In the obituary of Addie Maitland who died 24 September 1903, her husband, Robert Maitland was listed as a survivor.14
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1905 State Census of Avery Twp., Hancock County, Iowa, enumerated in 1905. His children Robert and Rosa were listed as living with him.21
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1910 U.S. Federal Census of Union Twp., Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, enumerated 28 April 1910, described as a widowed farmer on a rented farm. His children: Rose B. and James R., were listed as living with him.6
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1915 State Census of Ell Twp., Hancock County, Iowa, enumerated in 1915, described as a widower. His children Rosina and James were listed as living with him. He had been in the US for 46 years, and in Iowa for 11 years. ALthough both James and Rosina weere noted as living "with parents" I can find no record that would appear to be Robert's wife (Feb 2022.)22
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1925 State Census of Belmont, Wright County, Iowa, enumerated in 1925, described as a widower. He had been in the US and in Iowa for 47 years. However, the 1880 census (45 years earlier) shows he was enumerated in Illinois, so this data value is questionable. His parents were James Maitland and Sarah Renwick..23
Robert Maitland appeared on the 1930 U.S. Federal Census of Belmond, Belmond Twp., Wright County, Iowa, enumerated 2 April 1930, described as a widower, living by himself. He had immigrated to the US in 1869, and was a naturalized citizen.10

In the obituary of James Maitland who died 31 January 1932, his brother, Robert Maitland was listed as a survivor.25
In the obituary of Herbert Maitland who died 16 August 1944, his brother, of Klemie, Ia., Robert Maitland was listed as predeceased.18
     Research notes (October 2016):
Was Robert Maitland who was working on Robert Renwick's farm in 1870 his nephew, the son of James Maitland and Sarah Renwick?

If he was, he was enumerated twice.26

Robert Maitland is referenced in my analysis of Robert Maitland and Effie L. Attwood in June 2017; I accept that Effie, the mother of Guy S Maitland was married to the same Robert Maitland who later married Adeline Fox. Guy's obituary lists J. R. Maitland and Mrs. John Hyde as his siblings. They were the children of Robert Maitland and Adeline Fox.
This does not explain why Effie and Robert are listed in a 1940 directory of Elgin, Illinois.26
