9 April 1954 Shirley was hospitalized with burns received during the fire that destroyed their home, claiming her mother and brother, Grant; Noble Mayhew lost his wife, Pauline from injuries sustained trying to save her son Grant who was severely burned while trying to light a heater. The house was destroyed. Shirley and Geraldine were hospitalized with burns but survived. His youngest children, William escaped injury when their brother Carl lowered them with from a second story window.2
