During the fifty years that Mr. Arends was so closely associated with the people of this county In a business way, ho made hundreds of friends who will learn of his passing with the deepest regret.
Joseph Nicholas Arends was born January 6, 1854, at Aix LaChapelle, Germany, but came to America with his parents when he was a small lad, the family locating at Mobile. Ala., in 1859. There his father engaged In the manufacture of powder and ammunition for the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
When he was a boy 15 years old, he left home and went out In the world to make his own. He went at first to the City of New York, where he remained for a few years, and then came west to seek his fortune, locating at Malden, where he was given employment by the J. S. Levi Mercantile Co., an outstanding store of this county at that time. By giving the strictest attention to his duties and showing e natural aptitude for business he was taken into the firm In 1889, and continued an active member of this firm until Its dissolution last year.when he and his partner, A. Lebermuth, sold out.
It was while Mr Arends was a member of the firm that the Levi Mercantile Co. built the first brick building house In Malden. This building burned a number of years ago. More than 30 years ago, Mr. Arends moved to Kennett where he lived for a few years, while The Levi Co.. operated a store In this city, but he returned to Malden about thirty years ago, and has continuously made his home there since. Mr. Arends looked after the buying of cotton for his firm, and as one of our subscribers, who was In this office Monday, said, there were few loads of cotton which had come to Malden, up until a few years ago. that were not Inspected by Mr. Arends.
Mr. Arends was married September 3, 1895 to Miss Dora Francis Xavier (Miss Dora Keen.) who with four children, survives. The children are Robert, now of Birmingham, Ala; Mrs. Jeannette Bostic, Malden; John, of St. Louis and Joseph, Malden.
