Robert Gilroy
(handwritten annotation "1937")
Never regaining consciousness from an attack of cerebral hemorrhage early on Monday of last week, Robert Edward Gilroy died at his home in Manitou on Wednesday, at the age of 67 years.
The funeral was held on Friday, service at the house and graveside being conducted, by the Rev. G. F. Dyker, of the United church. The pall bearers were six Great War veterans, namely: Comrades D. L. Cameron, Edward Sanders, Charles Cassells, John Edgar, W. E. Snyder, and E. A. Goldsmith. Comrade Charles Gill sounded the last post, as the earth closed over the remains of this war veteran.
Mr. Gilroy was born in Epping, Grey County, Ontario. He came to the west about 42 years ago, and during that time has practically made Manitou his native western home. In 1915 he left for Toronto, where he was the first to enlist in the 2nd Division of Ammunition Park, and served his country overseas during the remaining years of the war. On his return to Canada, he married Isabella Stiven seventeen years ago, and has lived in Manitou until the time of his death. His widow survives.
He took an active interest in the Manitou Branch of the B.E.S.L., of which he was a member. In memory of their old comrade, the Branch, along with others, placed a beautiful; wreath on his grave.10
