Newcomer Gets Much Praise In Work In Drama
Lloyd Robert Newcomer of De Kalb has returned from two busy months in Southern California where he attended the Pasadena Playhouse School of the Theater and received a certificate for the successful completion of Its six weeks intensive practical training.
Mr. Newcomer, who has determined on a profession career of play direction, has worked with ' several groups in the middlewest. Not only as assistant director but as actor he has beep associated with dramatics in DeKalb, and has directed at the local high school. While in Pasadena, Mr. Newcomer participated in two studenjt productions. In the first, a costume play of the Civil War era, "School," he played the major part of Mr. Krux, receiving commendatory reviews by the local press. In the second, Klabund's Chinese tragedy of the thirteenth century. "The Chalk Circle," which was presented in the traditional mode of the oriental stage, he not only took the role of Choo-choo, but was responsible as chairman of the committee for the transformation of the auditorium by means of architectural decorations into a typical Chinese theater.
While in Pasadena, Mr. Newcomer also visited other points of interest in the vicinity, among them, the Mt. Wilson observatory, and the Huntington Library Art Galleries which contain Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" and other treasures. Mr. Newcomer was especially honored by permission of Gilmor Brown founder and supervising director of the Pasadena Playhouse, to watch performances on the main stage from the wings to gain first hand experience in theater practice, and method.10
