Disappearance of a Bank Manager.
The Liverpool Mercury considers the rumour true that Mr. Thomas Goodier, late manager of the North and South Wales Bank in Liverpool, has disappeared. Mr. Goodier was for many years connected with Barned's Bank. On the stoppage of that company, he was appointed sub-manager of the North and South Wales Bank, and on the decease of the manager in June, 1867, he succeeded to that post, which he filled until the date of his resignation, about a month since. Many anxious inquiries have recently been made for Mr. Goodier, but he has disappeared, and no clue has been obtained as to his whereabouts. It is supposed that he has been involved in connection with certain mining and colliery speculations, but it is due to state that the accounts of the bank are completely balanced. There is great commiseration expressd for Mr. Goodier.18

BEFORE MR. REGISTRAR TURING.
IN RE Thomas Goodier. This was the first meeting of creditors under the bankruptcy of Mr. Goodier, the late manager of the North and South Wales Bank. Mr. Martin and Mr. William Stone appeared for the creditors. Debts amounting to £2908 were proved, and a resolution passed to accept a composition of 2s. 0d. in the pound, payable on or before the 10th of February, 1869. That resolution, on being confirmed by tlie court, will have the effect of annulling the bankruptcy. The whole liabilities of the bankrupt, secured and unsecured, do not amount to more than £90000, and, being all legitimate debts, it is a matter of surprise that the bankrupt should have, prior to his bankruptcy, so mysteriously disappeared. He attended the meeting and surrendered, but was not examined.20

THE WREXHAM SUICIDE.
The inquest on the body of Thomas Goodier, aged sixty-five. who was found dead at Shrewsbury, general station on Friday, was he Id on Saturday evening, at the offices of the station, before the borough coroner, Mr. R. E. Clarke. Deceased was well known in Liverpool, he being manager of the Cobden Mills, Wrexham, and formerly manager of the North end South Wales Bank in that city. The mills are now carried on by a limited liability company, and Mlr. J. T. Davies, corn merchant of Liverpool, and London is the chairman of the board of directors.
After the jury had viewed the body, the first witness called was Mr. Walter Jones, tanner, of Wrexham, who identified the body. On Thursday night he spent the evening with the deceased, and he then seemed in his usual health and spirits. He seemed to enjoy robust health. He usually attended Liverpool Corn Market on Fridays, and left Wrexham generally on Friday mornings. He either then went to the Corn Market or to the offices of the company in North John-street.
Chief Constable Harrop, of the Shrewsbury borough police, produced the things which he found on the deceased. Among them was a letter.which said "that was the cause of much of my misfortune, as the books were so much behind that I had to make up my profit and loss sheets largely by guess work. I hope Mr. Walter Jones got my watch, &c., which I sent in a parcel, this evening. God spare and bless my poor dear wife and Jessie.-T. Goodier." Another letter was from Bailey's Hotel, London, and signed J. T. Davies. which told the deceased not to go to Liverpool, as he would get him the information as to the markets, and there would be nothing material to do; if there was he would send a telegram, and it then went on to say, "Do let me have the list of amounts unpaid you have gone on, and some are three months old. I should have the list on Friday at the latest."
The jury returned a verdict that the deceased committed suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity.11
The following article appeared in the Worcester Berrow's Worcester Journal, 22 October 1881 :
Miscellaneous
...On the arrival in Shrewsbury of the express train from Birkenhead to London, at 1.25 on Friday, the body of a respectably-dressed man was found in one of the first-class compartments, quite dead. An examination disclosed a fearful wound in the right temple, and a revolver which lay on the floor of the carriage was evidently the weapon with which the injury was inflicted. There were no appearances indicating that a struggle had taken place, and no one in the train seems to have heard the report of the pistol. The train does not stop between Chester and Shrewsbury, and it is supposed that the shot was fired somewhere between these stations. The body was carried into one of the porters' rooms, and a further investigation resulted in the discovery in one of the pockets of a bottle of strychnine and a note.In the latter it was stated that the deceased's name was Thomas Goodier, that he was sixty years of age, and a corn merchant at Wrexham, and that some person, whose name he mentioned, had driven him to commit suicide, as his accounts were in a very confused state. It is believed the deceased entered the train at Birkenhead.23
