Emma and Katie Shewring, as identified by Lorrie Ellen Moffat née Scott. This picture could have been taken prior to their leaving England in1912 , or shortly after their arrival in Canada, to assure relatives back home that they had arrived safely.
Emma Johnson died in June 1946 at age 67.8,4
Emma Stoakes of General Delivery, Moose Jaw was listed as next-of-kin/contact on her husband Victor's attestation (enlistment) papers.12
Thos. W. and Emma Shewring appeared on the 1911 British Census of England, at Yardley area, Birmingham, at Warwickshire, enumerated 2 April 1911, described as a groom (domestic).5 She was included on a passenger manifest for the "Royal George" of the Royal Line dated 10 July 1912 departing from Bristol, England, bound for Quebec and Montreal accompanied by her daughter, Kate. She was identified as a housewife, and her daughter as "school". They traveled 3rd class.13 She lived at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1913.14 Emma Shewring and Elizabeth Dure were included on a passenger manifest for the "Royal George" of the Royal Line dated 15 July 1914 departing from the Port of Bristol, England, bound for Quebec. They both were travelling 3rd class. I presume they were trveling together, but have not yet (Mar 2024) established their exact relationship. They may have been sisters since Lizzie was an aunt of Emma's daughter, Kate.15 Emma Shewring and Elizabeth Dure were included on a passenger manifest for the "Royal George" of the Royal Line dated 25 July 1914 arriving at Port of Québec, Québec, Canada, ultimately bound for Moose Jaw by C.N.R.. Note that Lizzie is reported to be 10 years yunger than when she departed England.16
Emma Stoakes and Victor Stoakes were included in a circa December 1919 photograph with Kate Shewring, Victorine Stoakes and Tena Stoakes(see below.)17
In 1920,Emma and Victor moved with their family, Ruby, Victorine and Tena, from from Moose Jaw to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada.18
Victor J. and Emma Stoakes appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, 955 Hochelaga St., enumerated 1 June 1921. Victor was described as Salvation A(army) and a farmer on his own account. Their children Victorine and Tena were listed as living with them. I cannot read the entry in column 31 which is possibly indicating the area of his farm. He reported that he immigrated in 1906, while Emma and Kate came in 1915.6
In the obituary of Alma Joyce Georgena Stoakes who died 6 January 1936, her parents, Captain Victor Stoakes and Mrs. Stoakes, of Swift Current, were listed as surviving her.18
In the obituary of Tena Ruth Elizabeth MacKay who died 27 November 2015, her parents, Victor Stoakes and Emma Stoakes were listed or implied as predeceased.19
Research notes (March 2024):
Is this Emma Shewring née Johnson's baptism record?20
Research notes (March 2024):
Is her surname Johnson, a sister of Elizabeth (?)?
In the newspaper item about the marriage of Emma's daughter, Kate, the reception was at the home of her aunt, Mrs. A. (sic) Dure. I have considered this a typo, and equate her to Elizabeth Dure.21

Sparling Robert Scott died on 24 August 1979, in a local nursing home, at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 81.11,7
The following selected information is extracted from the obituary of Sparling Robert Scott.
Robert Sparling Scott of Moose Jaw began military service on 6 March 1916 at the age of 17 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 128th Battalion. He was an unmarried teamster and cornet player (with the Salvation Army). He was described as being 5' 10" tall with a fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Walter Scott of Moose Jaw. He was assigned regimental number 782215.12
On 15 August 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, embarked with his unit of the 46th Battalion arriving at Liverpool on the 21st.13
On 23 May 1917, He went to France as part of the 46th Battalion and on the 25th was taken on strength in the 45th Battalion.14
On 26 October 1917, at Passchendaele, Belgium, he was wounded in action just over 4 months after joining the 45th Battalion. He received a through and through gun shot wound just above his right elbow, resulting in impaired movement of ring and little fingres. By 31 Oct 1917 he had been invalided to England. He was discharged from the Reading War Hospital on 15 Mar 1918. He embarked from England to return to Canada on 22 Sep 1918. From 11 Feb 1920 to 02 Mar 1920 he was treated in the Manitoba Medical Hospital in Winnipeg for impaired use of his right hand and impaired sensation in the hand and right forearm. Case notes show that after two 5 minute tratments of the wound area with a "wire brush," he had 75% movement in the affected fingers. I would be showing improvment too, if I thought they were going to use the wire brush again.15 Robert Sparling Scott ended his military service on 22 November 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, as physically unfit due to wounds, referring to his gun shot wound in his right arm. He had served for 6 months in France with the 45th (sic) Battalion according to his discharge certificate.
His name was also recorded as Sparling Robert Scott used throughout the military file records of his son Gordon, as well as in his own obituary.17,7
He was commonly known as Sparl.9
Robert S. Scott appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Muskoka and Parry Sound District, Ontario in the household of his parents, Solomon and Nora Scott.5
Robert Sparling Scott appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatchewan in the household of his parents, Solomon and Nora Scott.3
He appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces RM of Wheatlands No. 163, Saskatchewan in the household of his parents, Solomon and Nora Scott, listed as a farmer's son although he was already at Camp Hughes, the CEF training camp.18
Sparl was referenced in news that Foster Scott and Sparl, were respectively killed in action and wounded published on 29 November 1917 at the newspaper the Huntsville Forester.19
Sparling and Myrtle Ann Scott appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Ward 1, enumerated 1 June 1921. Sparling was described as a bookkeeper, possibly for a bank but the industry is barley legible. His brother, recorded as his brother-in-law, Hector Wells Scott was included in the household.8
In the obituary of Charlotte Isabella Patterson who died 13 October 1930, Sparling Scott was listed as the father of some of her great-great-grandchildren.20 He was included on a passenger manifest for the Cunard Steamship Company Ltd ship, "Queen Elizabeth" dated 14 April 1952 arriving at the Port of Southampton, England, from New York. He wastravellng with Myrtle and their son, Robert. They were travelling as tourists.21 He and Myrtle Scott were included on a passenger manifest for the Canadian Pacific ship, "Empress Of France" dated 20 May 1952 departing from the port of Liverpool, England, bound for Quebec and Montreal. Canadian Military Service - WWI
End of Military Service section.16
