H. C. Mabee Dies, Former Official Of Mines Dept.
Chief chemist of the Division of Metallic Minerals in the Department of Mines until his retirement in 1937, Horace Charles Mabee, 99 Findlay avenue, died at Pembroke on Tuesday, in his 75th year. Mr. Mabee had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Frank Young in Pembroke, when he was taken ill. He was admitted to the General hospital there, but failed to rally.
Born near Port Rowan, Ont., he received his early education at public and high schools in Port Rowan and at the Collegiate Institute, Aylmer, Ont. After a year at the University of Toronto, he entered the class of 1896 at Queen's. He graduated in 1898 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. In chemistry, mineralogy and metallurgy, being one of the first to receive this degree, after the establishment of the Science Faculty Queen's.
During his summer vacations while attending university and after graduation, Mr. Mabee gained much valuable experience in the field of mining, working with many mining and development companies in the Rainy River, and Kenora districts of Northern Ontario. He was award ed the Bruce Scholarship in Metallurgy and appointed assistant professor of metallurgy, Queen's University in 1897. Subsequently he served as chief chemist with the Deseronto Iron Co., and with Berry Bros., Detroit, Mich.

The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Northcote Burke in the parlors of George H. Rogers, Ltd., 172 Elgin street, on Friday at 2.30 p.m. Interment will be in Pinecrest cemetery.7
Chief chemist of the Division of Metallic Minerals in the Department of Mines until his retirement in 1937, Horace Charles Mabee, 99 Findlay avenue, died at Pembroke on Tuesday, in his 75th year. Mr. Mabee had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Frank Young in Pembroke, when he was taken ill. He was admitted to the General hospital there, but failed to rally.
Born near Port Rowan, Ont., he received his early education at public and high schools in Port Rowan and at the Collegiate Institute, Aylmer, Ont. After a year at the University of Toronto, he entered the class of 1896 at Queen's. He graduated in 1898 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. In chemistry, mineralogy and metallurgy, being one of the first to receive this degree, after the establishment of the Science Faculty Queen's.
During his summer vacations while attending university and after graduation, Mr. Mabee gained much valuable experience in the field of mining, working with many mining and development companies in the Rainy River, and Kenora districts of Northern Ontario. He was award ed the Bruce Scholarship in Metallurgy and appointed assistant professor of metallurgy, Queen's University in 1897. Subsequently he served as chief chemist with the Deseronto Iron Co., and with Berry Bros., Detroit, Mich.
