LINCOLN MERCHANT’S LOSSES
Market Went Steadily Against Him
When William Stevenson White, retired corn merchant, of Parkhurst, Cross o’Cliff Hill, Lincoln, appeared before the Registrar (Major H. A. Bell) at Lincoln bankruptcy court for his public examination yesterday. he told the Official Receiver (Mr. E. C. Midgley) that five years ago when he sold the goodwill of his business and carried on a wholesale business from his private address, he was worth about £6.000. Of this, between £3,000 and £4,000 was represented by book debts.
From that time, however, the market went steadily against him and during the first 14 months his losses totalled £3.380. In 1930 he lost £5.546.
The loss he sustained on a number of shares In Clayton and Shuttleworth more than accounted for his deficiency of £493.
The examination was closed subject to the signing of the transcript of the shorthand notes.
In an earlier story (06 Jul 1933) we read: "Mr. White attributes his failure to depreciation in the value of industrial shares, the drop in the wheat prices 18 months ago, and the depreciation in the value of property."15,16

The following biographical information is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal knowledge or recollections, 1963:
In about 1963 or 1964 Sheridene rolled a car on a country road returning from a weiner roast at the regional park near Environ. She was thrown from the car and watched as it tumbled towards her. At the last moment a door came open and stopped it from rolling over her. She was taken to a hospital in Saskatoon where they found she had a "broken back." Fortunately it did not result in a severe spinal injury. (Feb 2017 - her daughter Koreen tells me it was a (1st lumbar vertebrae) burst compression fracture.) This weiner roast was one of my first outings on my own with a group of kids from school. I remember Mervin and Terry visiting us to see if I had seen any drinking at the party. I cannot remember whether or not I did, but I know they wanted to suppress any speculation that Sheridene had been drinking. I do not think she had been, but since she was driving her boy friend might have been.
Koreen also added that although her parents had met previously during Cliff's visits to his Aunt Jennie and Uncle Ray Summach's farm, they first "met" when he was the x-ray technologist at City Hospital where Sheridene was taken after the accident. He joked that she couldn't get away from him.11,7
