The following article appeared in the Renfrew, Ontario Renfrew Mercury, 6 August 1895 :
" between 1840 and 1848, Charles, Joseph and Edward Mayhew were living between Thomson's Hill and the village of Renfrew, on the south side of the Creek. Peter Mayhew and Nulbeir Jourdain lived on the west side of the village. It is feasible that all four were brothers although I have not identified where Edward fits in, and since Peter married Sophie Jourdain it is again feasible that this is the same Peter Mayhew.
Assume Peter Mayo born about 1823, spouse of Sophia Jourdain is the same person as Peter Mayhew, born about 1823, who was a widower at the time of the 1881 census. Baptist Jordon was enumerated with his family. Both had a daughter Elizabeth born about 1873. Other children's names also contribute to this assumption.24
Other information from their marriage registration:

Death of A Pioneer
The Mother of the First White Child Born in Renfrew Laid to Rest.
On Friday morning there peacefully entered into rest, at the home of her son, Mr. Elkanah Mayhew, Charlotte Honeywell, wife of the late Joseph Mayhew, sr., and one of the oldest settlers in this locality. The deceased was born in the township of Montague Lanark County, and was married to Mr. Mayhew when quite a young woman. They settled first in Nepean; but soon moved to the Fourth Chute in Renfrew County. Here they lived one winter. Then, some 69 years ago, the removed to the township of Horton, locating in that portion which is now the town of Renfrew, on the farm of which what is now Mr. Wm. Plaunt's was then a part On (sic) this farm, - the house being then about where the C.P.R. track now crosses Main street, - was born the second of the family, Ira, the first white child entitled to call Renfrew his native place. Shortly afterwards, Mr and Mrs Mayhew removed to what is now the Mackay farm, on the hillside between Thomsonville and the town. Here they brought up their family. Mr Mayhew died some fourteen years ago; and for the last nine years the widow lived with her son Elkanah. For five or six years she has been blind, but otherwise fairly well preserved. The last winter her health gave indication of failing. On Saturday, a large number of friends of the family followed to the grave the remains of one who was a veritable pioneer. There were only three other families settled in the locality when she and her husband took up their residence here.
- In the absence of Rev. Mr. Delong, at Conference, Mr. John Stevenson conducted the funeral services; Rev. Dr. Campbell also taking part.20
