The following analysis is from my personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources.
According to the book "The Story of Renfrew,
" between 1840 and 1848, Charles, Joseph and Edward Mayhew were living between Thomson's Hill and the village of Renfrew, on the south side of the Creek. Peter Mayhew and Nulbeir Jourdain lived on the west side of the village. It is feasible that all four were brothers although I have not identified where Edward fits in, and since Peter married Sophie Jourdain it is again feasible that this is the same Peter Mayhew.
Assume Peter Mayo born about 1823, spouse of Sophia Jourdain is the same person as Peter Mayhew, born about 1823, who was a widower at the time of the 1881 census. Baptist Jordon was enumerated with his family. Both had a daughter Elizabeth born about 1873. Other children's names also contribute to this assumption.14

Notes courtesy of Gerlynn Cont in an emali Nov 9, 2003:
According to the archives in Renfrew Joseph Mayhew was one of the earliest settlers on the site of what is now the town of Renfrew. He was a lumberman who came to the district from Chateauguay, he rented 200 acres of land in 1829.
It appears from the info that Joseph Mayhew was the son of Pierre Maheux and M.Anne Trudelle. Joseph's ancestors were Acadians who came from Perche, France around 1604 and who settled in the Maritimes. When they were expelled from the Maritimes, they travelled and settled in Chateauguay, PQ.
More info can be found in the book called"founding Families of Admaston, Horton and Renfrew Village" you can get the book from the heritage renfrew Society.. Joseph's parents, Pierre Maheux and M. Anne Trudelle, moved to the States for a while. Joseph was born there, in Ogdentburg, but we know that in 1829 Joseph rented 200 acres of land from Thomas McLean's brother, an army surgeon, who received a land grant of 400 acres after the war of 1812 against the United States. Joseph became known as a lumberman. In the 1861 census he is listed as a "teamster". In 1835 Joseph moved from that property to the farm he eventually bought 13 years later, lot 9, concession 1. He died at age 83 on August 16, 1881 in Horton Township. He is listed on the 1851 census form, on page 27.
Joseph Mayhew, a farmer, owned 50 acres of land, of which 30 acres were under cultivation. He had twenty-five and one-half acres in crops, four acres in pasture and half an acre in garden, the rest of the 20 acres were woods. His dwelling is listed as a shanty and a log house. His birth place as the United States. His religion listed as Catholic, age 53, birth March - C1798.
His wife, Charlotte Mayhew [Honeywell] was born near Bytown, which is now known as Ottawa. She was a Methodist and 44 years of age, birth August - C1809. Her parents were Ira Honeywell and Charlotte Andrews. Charlotte's grandfather was Rice Honeywell, one of the first settlers of Nepean. They had 9 children ......
